Teacher Trainees directed to feed themselves effective May 1- MoE

Teacher Trainees to feed themselves? The Ministry of Education has directed all Teacher Trainees in the 46 public Colleges of Education to feed themselves effective May 1, 2022.
This is a piece of sad news as teacher trainees continue to look forward to their delayed and unpaid trainees’ allowances.
Per the new directive from the MoE to GTEC, “Trainee teachers will be provided with two meals, breakfast and supper only for one week, from April 23 to April 30, 2022″. However, “Trainee teachers from May 1 to May 8, 2022 shall be given lunch only”.
Teacher Trainees directed to feed themselves effective May 1- Underlying reasons
According to the letter that contained the directive, the various Principals of Teacher Training Colleges have not been able to settle debts owed suppliers for food-related items. Calls for the feeding component for the teacher trainees allowance to be increased is also yet to be approved by the government. The continuous increase in prices of goods has further compounded the situation.
Suppliers have therefore refused to supply the various schools since the debts owed them have gone up and the government is yet to settle them.
“It has not come to a point where suppliers have backed their threat of not supplying any food item to Colleges with concrete action by not supplying Colleges with food items until they have money owed them.” The letter stated.
The current stocks of most Colleges of Education can only take care of their feeding needs for one week if the students are to be given three square meals.
It is this current situation that informed the directive that Teacher Trainees should indirectly feed themselves effective May 1 as they shall be given only lunch. Thus, students must take care of their launch from now end of April. Their Break Fast and Supper would be their own responsibility between 1st and 8th May 2022.
In a related development, teacher trainees have called on GTEC to increase their trainees’ allowance as a result of the current economic hardship.
