The Drobonso Community Day Senior High School (Drobonso SHS E-Block), one of the flagship E-Block projects initiated during President John Dramani Mahama’s first term (2012–2016), has resurfaced in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons. Located in the Sekyere Afram Plains District of the Ashanti Region—situated just across the River Afram—the facility remains a haunting monument to project neglect.
In a viral video circulating on X (formerly Twitter), the current state of the school reveals a nearly completed edifice left to the mercy of the elements. Despite the project being partially furnished and structurally sound, weeds have swallowed the site while the infrastructure is literally rotting away.
What is currently on the Drobonso SHS E-Block Project Site?
An amateur video captured by a concerned Ghanaian at the project site highlights the tragic waste of state resources. According to the footage, the following facilities were either completed or near completion before being abandoned:
Main School Building: Structurally completed and standing tall amidst overgrown bushes.
Student Furniture: Desks and chairs were supplied and are currently parked in several classrooms.
Science Laboratory: Equipment and fittings were fixed. The science lab is almost ready for use.
Staff Accommodation: Residential buildings for the head teacher and teachers are completed but left in the bush.
Utilities & Infrastructure:
Electricals: Fans and electrical fittings were nearly finished.
Water: Polytanks and water storage systems are visible on the premises.
Drainage: Gutters within the school compound are fully constructed.
Waste of Materials: Electrical poles intended to connect the school to the national grid have been left on the ground, left at the mercy of the weather to rot.
How The Pattern of Political Neglect Affects Drobonso Community Day Senior High School E-Block
The “surprised gentleman” who recorded the video questioned the logic behind using scarce state funds to build edifices only to leave them to decay. This culture of neglecting projects started by predecessors has plagued Ghana since the overthrow of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
While many expected modern leaders to view governance as a continuous process, modern politicians have arguably become more inconsiderate, engaging in wasteful spending. Under the previous Nana Addo administration—with Education Ministers Hon. Mathew Opoku Prempeh and Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum—several such E-blocks were left untouched for what many believe were purely political reasons. The current leadership of the Ministry of Education has also not been proactive as far as the renovation and usage of the abandoned E-blocks are concerned.

The Irony of the New Mahama Administration
The most striking part of this development is the timing. It has been approximately 16 months since President John Mahama returned to office as President of Ghana.
Ghanaians expected that Mahama, through the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service (GES), would have prioritized taking stock of his own initiated projects, renovating them, and supplying the necessary resources to open their doors. Sadly, 16 months in, the very president who birthed these “Community Day” schools has done little to breathe life back into the Drobonso project.

Why Completing the Drobonso Community Day Senior High School Matters
The operationalization of this facility would do more than just provide a classroom for students. It represents a massive economic engine for the Sekyere Afram Plains District:
Educational Access: Providing a conducive learning environment and increasing the stock of public secondary schools.
Job Creation: Direct employment for teachers and headteachers, plus indirect jobs for traders and transport operators.
Local Economy: Forcing school-related businesses to set up in the immediate environment, sparking brisk business in a rural area.
It is time for President John Mahama to walk his talk and ensure that these multimillion-cedi investments serve the Ghanaian children they were built for. The minister of education and the GES must work together to change the narrative, especially when their government was the one that built the edifices. They have no excuse. If you built it and it was neglected, you are back in government, righting the wrong done to the people of Ghana and your own project now.
