Your personal intervention saved us – UENR thanks IGP Dampare
The University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) has publicly said thanks to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, for his decisive intervention following a recent robbery on the Odumase-Badu road near Sunyani, which tragically resulted in the death of a student and left several others injured.
The incident, which targeted students and lecturers returning from a field trip, occurred on Tuesday, April 16, 2024.
In a heartfelt statement issued the following day, UENR’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Elvis Asare-Bediako, praised Dr. Dampare for his immediate response to the crisis.
“The IGP initiated a series of conference calls involving myself, my management team, and the Hon. Bono Regional Minister. He also personally interacted with most of the students involved in the educational trip today. We are immensely grateful for his leadership and hands-on approach,” Prof. Asare-Bediako shared on Facebook.
The university community, including the Governing Council, Management, Staff, Alumni, and Strategic Partners, have all acknowledged and celebrated the professionalism with which the Ghana Police Service handled the situation.
This includes the rapid action taken to ensure justice for the victims and their families.
Dr. Dampare’s personal engagement with the family of Abdul Aziz Issah, the student who lost his life, and his assurances to the university and regional authorities about ongoing investigations were particularly noted.
The police’s swift response led to the apprehension of a suspect linked to the attack, with ongoing efforts to capture the remaining accomplices.
This incident has raised significant security concerns within the community, prompting calls for increased safety measures along vulnerable routes in the region.
The Ghana Police Service has committed to a thorough investigation and to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens.
This commitment is demonstrated by the swift actions taken to bring those responsible to justice, helping to reassure a shaken community of the resolve and responsiveness of their law enforcement agencies.
