2 Busted for illegal registration of WASSCE-SC 2024

Two individuals were apprehended in Swedru, Central Region, for orchestrating an illegal registration scheme for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination for School Candidates (WASSCE-SC) 2024.

The arrests were made possible through the collaborative efforts of the National Security’s Intelligence Unit and the security team from the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).

The accused, 37-year-old Robert Hackman, a private teacher from Agona Swedru, and 54-year-old Kwabena Baah Achemfour, a part-time teacher at Kenyasi SDA Senior High School, are now assisting with the investigation at the Swedru District Police Headquarters.

Their operation involved registering individuals who were either not qualified or had previously failed the WASSCE, offering them another chance at the exams under fraudulent conditions.

Hackman’s network extended across various cities, including Accra, Takoradi, and Cape Coast, gathering hopefuls for this illicit scheme.

The duo had sophisticated tools at their disposal: a biometric device and a laptop, which they used in their operations, along with school uniforms to disguise the unqualified candidates as legitimate students.

Labelled as “examination profiteers” by security agencies, they manipulated the system to insert these candidates among genuine students at the SDA SHS, Kenyasi, and even provided them with unauthorized materials during exams.

Their capture occurred during an attempt to set up a makeshift registration center in the ICT laboratory of Adishie Mma Preparatory School, Swedru.

Investigations uncovered that Achemfour exploited his position to enroll unsuspecting individuals under the guise of a fictitious institution, Divine College, and charged each GH¢6,000.00, registering a total of 172 candidates under various non-existent schools.

In light of these events, security officials recommended that the SDA SHS, Kenyasi, be stripped of its recognition as a WAEC examination center to prevent further malpractices.

Additionally, they advised a thorough review of the candidates listed by SDA SHS for the upcoming WASSCE-SC to identify and disqualify the fraudulently registered individuals, aiming to uphold the integrity of the examination process.
