The Ministry of Education has released the full 2023 Academic Calendar for SHSs & Basic Schools. According to the MoE, there will be no Double Track for grade level, however, only two year group of the 2023 three cohorts of students are in school at any period in time for the 2023.
The proposed calendar ensures that each year group meets or exceeds the total minimum contact hours of 3,402 hours over the course of the three years.
Due to the start of the calendar in January 2023, SHS 3 cannot enjoy a prolonged break.
This is to allow SHS 1 and SHS 2 to be in school as well. This means that the calendar will have to be fine-tune so that SHS 3 students can attend class continuously from January 2023 through the end of September 2023, when the WASSCE ends.
In the transitional option, two (2) of the three (3) year groups must be in school at a given time. In addition, the Colleges of Education have received an increase in their schools’ enrolment as a result of the Free Senior High School programme which required short term solution.

Per the new calendar WASSCE will be administered by WAEC in AUGUST/SEPTEMB 2023. Total contact Hours for the first semester for SHS1 to SHS3 will be 1,360 hours. In the second semester, the Total contact Hours SHS1 to SHS3 will be 1,296 hours.
SHS2 and SHS3 students will report to school on January 9th to start the first semester ahead of reopening for SHS1 who are expected to start the academic year on 20th February, 2023.
This means the BECE results for 2022 and the school placement will be released between January 4th and February 15th 2023.
