This is our first set of 2023 BECE SOCIAL STUDIES Mock Trial Questions and Answers for Junior High School candidates preparing for the BECE.
Take your time as a candidate to solve these questions and work on topics from which questions you were not able to solve confidently were set from.
Again, teachers of social studies should use these questions as class tests and quizzes to test their students. This will help reveal their weaknesses so that you can help them now.
Note that some of the questions come with suggested solutions while others do not have solutions. Do your best to attempt all of them.

1. a. Differentiate between Rotation and Revolution of the earth.
Rotation is the turning of the earth from west to east on its own axis whiles Revolution is the earth’s travel around the sun from West to East on its round-like (elliptical) orbit. [1.5 marks]
b. State three effects of Rotation and Revolution.
Rotation
i. Rotation of the earth causes day and night.
ii. Rotation causes tides (the fall and rise in sea levels) under the gravitational pull of the moon.
iii. It contributed to the earth been divided into 24 time zones. Etc 1 mk each x 3 = 3 marks
Revolution
i. Revolution of the earth results in the seasons’ winter, Autumn, Spring and Summer in the temperate Zone as well as the wet and dry seasons experienced in the tropics.
ii. It also leads to changing the length of day and night.
iv. Its leads to differences in the altitudes of the mid-day sun. Etc 1 MK each x 3 = 3 marks
c. Describe how the three types of rain are formed
RELIEF RAINFALL
a. Warm moist air from the sea blows.
b. Warm is forced to rise over the mountains.
c. Air cools as it is forced to rise and condenses.
d. Stratus clouds form in the sky and fall as rain.
e. Leeward side receives little or no rain.

d. What is the difference between dyke, Block Mountain and tectonic plateau? [5 marks]
A dyke(dike) is a diagonal intrusive wall-like landform formed when magma solidifies in a vent across the pre-existing bedding planes of rocks.
Block Mountains is a block of land raised between two parallel faults as a result of earth movements.
A tectonic plateau is formed when movements within the earth cause some areas to uplift whiles others depressed. The uplifted area is termed a tectonic plateau
2. a. Explain how the three types of rock are formed.
Mechanical sedimentary rocks are formed when materials derived from other rocks are cemented. An example is Sandstone.
Organic sedimentary rocks are formed from the remains of living organisms like shellfish. Examples are chalk and limestone.
Chemical sedimentary rocks are formed by chemicals that are left behind when the liquid containing the mineral evaporates living the hardened chemical. Examples are potash and rock salt.
b. Mention four (4) importance of rocks/MOUNTAINS to the socio-economic development of Ghana.
i. Rack such as metamorphic rocks serve as chief raw materials for the construction of houses and offices, bridges and road, seaports, and industrial plants.
ii. Mountains and rocky places like the Shai hills and the umbrella rock at Boti serve as attractive tourist destinations through which the country earns revenue and foreign exchange.
iii. Precious minerals like gold and diamond are obtained from some rocks.
iv. Rocks serve as parent material in soil formation when they are weathered or broken down through denudation. ETC

i. Volcanic Mountain
It is formed when eroded or ejected materials from the long narrow crack in the earth’s crust fall around the vent of a volcano in successive layers to build a cone-like mountain. [ 2 marks]
ii. Mantle
It is the layer of rock between the crust and the core which measures about 2900 km thick and is made up of heavy rocks.It has a high temperature and is mainly solid. [2 marks]
iii. Eclipse of the moon
Eclipse of the moon / Lunar eclipse occurs when the earth passes between the moon and the sun leading to the earth’s shadow falling on the moon. [1 mark]

d. Highlight four (4) benefits of rainfall.
a. Rains serve as a good source of water for domestic uses such as cooking, drinking, and washing.
b. Rain supports irrigation for the cultivation of crops in the dry season for an all-year-round supply of food.
c. Rains help cool the atmosphere which makes the weather friendlier for humans and livestock
d. Rains help in the cultivation of a variety of crops during the rainy season

3.a. What is a local government?
A local government is a sub government unit established by the central government through an Act of parliament to administer a local area [4 marks]
b. State four (4) function of the judicial arm of government
i. The judiciary settles cases and ensures fair play between individuals and states.
ii. They interpret the law or constitution through the Supreme Court.
iii. They make laws by using past rulings to of cases to pass judgment on new and similar cases.
iv. They strike down or change decisions of the legislature or executive if they find are found to be unconstitutional.
v. They administer wills, registration of marriages, etc.
vi. They work as custodians of the constitution to make sure no one treats it with disrespect.

i. They are responsible for the development of the district.
ii. They initiate and carry out studies and research to help they perform their duties.
iii. They help maintain peace by working hand in hand with the security service like the police.

v. They raise funds through borrowing, loans and internally generated funds to develop they districts.

4. a. What is the difference between government and society?
i. Government is a group of people or institutions that run the affairs of a country or a local area. [2makrs]
ii. A Society is a well-structured community of people united by similar traditions, institutions, and origins.[2 marks]
b. Mention four (4) functions of the executive arm of government.
i. They formulate policies or proper bills to be passed into laws.
ii. They prepare the national budget which is the countries expected income and expenditure for a given year.
iii. The executive arm nominates ministers and judges and send it to the legislature for approval.
iv. They through the service s like the police service implement or execute or enforce laws
v. They through the president exercise the prerogative power of mercy by pardoning sentenced criminals.
vi. They perform ceremonial functions such as on the Independence Day and other national celebrations.
vii. The executive assent or sign bill into law through the president.

v. He informs the District Assembly about the views , proposals and opinions of his people

5. a. What is development?
Development is a positive growth that includes qualitative and quantitative improvement in the lives of the people in a particular society to make life comfortable [2 marks]
b. In what four ways can Ghana boost its agriculture production?
i. Farmers must employ improved methods of farming such as planting in rolls, etc
ii. Agricultural imputes and equipment (tractors, combined harvesters, and the like) should be provided to farmers for free or at a subsidized price.
iii. Farmers should be educated on the need to practice irrigation farming instead of always relying on rain-fed agriculture.
iv. Large storage facilities like silos should be provided to farmers to help boost production and avoid post-harvest losses.
v. Banks should provide financial assistance to farmers by giving them farmers cooperative loans to help them begin each farming season with confidence.
vi. Government should honour farmers through the farmers day celebration to make the youth go into agriculture
