2023 NSS Postings; Know The Difference Between Subvented And Non-Subvented Categories

The National Service Secretariat (NSS) has released its 2023 Postings for the 2023/2024 National Service year. Personnel are placed in two different categories; Subvented and Non-Subvented. Let’s take a look at the difference between the Subvented and Non-Subvented Categories.
Subvented Category.
This is the most popular category where about 90% of service personnel are being placed in this category. Personnel under this category are those who are placed in institutions like schools, hospitals, agencies, ministries, departments, etc. On the appointment letter, personnel will find the following indicating that they have been placed in a subvented category. The government or NSS is responsible for the payment of your allowance.
“Please note that appointment is under a SUBVENTED CATEGORY. Service personnel under this category are those posted to Ministries, Agencies and Departments that depend entirely on Government for financial support.”

2023 NSS Postings; Know The Difference Between Subvented And Non-Subvented Categories
Non-Subvented Category
This is the opposite of the subvented category. Here, the organization personnel are placed will be the one responsible for the payment of monthly allowance. Such institutions include, private businesses, SSNIT, Cocoboard, Banks, etc.

“Please note that appointment is under a NON-SUBVENTED CATEGORY, Service personnel under this category are those posted to financially self-supporting User Agencies including Non-Governmental Organisations, and other organisations in both public and private sectors.
During your period of your national service, you will be paid a monthly non taxable allowance of seven hundred and fifteen Ghana cedis will be paid by the User Agency to which you are attached. Please note that this monthly allowance would be calculated on the basis of the number of working days you show up for work with your User Agency.
In addition, your User Agency is further required to pay 20% of the personnel allowance as service charge through the Executive Director to the National Service Scheme in a cross check. By endorsing, your attachment. your User Agency accepts to pay the service charge. You are however encouraged to inform the supervisor at the User Agency, and follow up regularly to ensure the amount due each month in respect of this service charge is, promptly paid.”
