2023 School Placement Delayed: MoE is not time-conscious and students are tensed

The long wait for the release of the 2023 School placement for the 2022 BECE graduates is unnecessary. Every year, the Ministry of Education and the Free SHS Secretariat delay the release of placements leading to the extension of the reopening of school by one or two weeks.

One would have expected that the Ministry of Education led by Dr. Adutwum would have learned from at least the last two placements done in 2021 and 2022 and improved on the processes that come prior to the release of the placements.

Sadly that is not the case. Per the released 2023 academic calendar for Secondary Schools, SHS1 students will be required to report to school on 20th February 2023 to start their academic journey at the Senior High School.

When will the school placement be released? The students who are still waiting for the release of the 2022/2023 School placements are tense just like their parents.

If students are to report to the school, on 20th February 2023, one would have expected that the placements should be out by now. At the time of this publication, the school placement checker cards were also not on the market. The availability of the checker cards gives an indication that the placements are about to be released.

Should there be challenges with the placements when they are out, the reopening date of February 20th may have to be extended.

The enrolment processes that parents would have to go through before their wards finally leave home for school is quite a hectic one.

  1. The placement has to be checked, and the candidate has to be placed or a self-placement is done.
  2. The parent would have to visit the school for a prospectus. Sometimes, the schools ask parents to go home and return some other day for the process.
  3. Parents will have to complete the prospectus and provide the required logistics for their boarding and day students.
  4. Parents would have to raise the needed finance to take care of the pre-departure expenses of the students.
  5. The student and the parent will have to report to school and pass through the school registration process which also takes time and is very stressful.

Since parents and guardians have personal commitments and are often workers, doing all these within a short time while staying away from work is another challenge.

The above proves that the early release of the 2023 school placements will go a long way to helping parents, students, and all stakeholders while late release will only create confusion, avoidable stress, and challenges for everyone. Let us be proactive and efficient is this system is actually a computerized system.
