2026 BECE Malpractice: Hundreds of Results Cancelled and Thousands Under Scrutiny
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has published the official malpractice figures following the release of provisional results for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE). Decisions approved at the 37th Meeting of the Final Awards and Examiners’ Appointment Committee highlight a strict crackdown on exam irregularities.
Breakdown of Approved Sanctions and Penalties
Following comprehensive investigations into irregularities detected during the conduct of papers and the marking of scripts, the Council executed the following punitive actions:
Entire Results Cancelled: 105 candidates suffered the complete cancellation of their entire examination results.
Subject Results Cancelled: Specific subject results belonging to 496 candidates were nullified.
Entire Results Withheld: The entire results of 48 candidates have been put on hold.
Subject Results Withheld: Individual subject results for 119 candidates were similarly withheld.

Mass Scrutiny Affects Over 2,700 Candidates
Beyond the immediate cancellations and withheld entries, WAEC has cast a wide net over institutional compliance. The subject results of 2,722 candidates spread across 229 schools have been frozen pending further investigations.
The Council has stated that these mass-withheld results will either be cleared and released or permanently cancelled depending on the final conclusions of ongoing investigations by August 31, 2026.
