2026 School Selection Starts Today: Download School Register Here

Official 2026 School Selection Register Now Available for Download AND 2026 BECE candidates to begin SHS selection on July 20 – GES

The 2026 school selection starts today in all schools across the country. In all, each student will select a maximum of 8 schools. Parents can also download the new 2026 school selection register here. The school selection period officially ends on 7th August, 2026, per the release by the Ghana Education Service.

Ghanaeducation.org is urging parents and teachers to ensure schools selected for candidates do not only meet the rules laid out for selection, but more importantly, the schools must be based on the aggregate obtained by the students. The fact that a student wants to select a category A school does not mean he or she qualifies for it. Taste and mere preference must not guide final school choices to ensure that students get placed into schools that their BECE results give them an urge over others.

The Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the TVET Service, has officially released the 2026 Second Cycle Public Schools Register. This essential 2026 School Selection Register document can be downloaded here and serves as the primary guidebook for all Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates, parents, and guardians as they navigate the upcoming Senior High School (SHS) and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) selection process.

Accessing the correct information is vital for a smooth transition from basic education to second-cycle institutions. The register provides a transparent overview of available schools, categorized by their facilities, program offerings, and operational statuses.

Program Matrices:

For Senior High Schools, the register highlights the specific programs available at each institution, ranging from General Science and General Arts to Agriculture, Business, Technical, Home Economics, Visual Arts, STEM, and Language programs.

Appendix Sections:

These provide crucial supplementary data, including specific details on STEM subjects and technical program breakdowns that might not be fully itemized in the main school tables.

Understanding the School Categorization

To assist in fair and equitable placement, schools are grouped into categories. For example, Category A features prominent institutions such as:

Yamfo Technical Institute (Ahafo Region)

St. Louis Senior High, Kumasi (Ashanti Region)

Adisadel College (Central Region)

Achimota Senior High (Greater Accra Region)

Tamale Senior High (Northern Region)

Archbishop Porter Girls’ Senior High (Western Region)

Category B and C schools also offer a wide array of programs, including specialized SHTS (Senior High Technical Schools) that combine traditional academic subjects with technical training. Parents are encouraged to review these lists alongside their children to ensure that the chosen schools align with the student’s career aspirations and the available programs at each site.

Guidance for Parents and Candidates

The school selection process is a significant milestone. To ensure success, consider these recommendations when reviewing the register:

  1. Analyze Program Availability: Before finalizing a choice, confirm that the school offers the specific combination of subjects (e.g., General Science, Business, or Visual Arts) required for the student’s intended career path.

  2. Verify Status and Type: Note whether a school is a day school, boarding, or a hybrid (Day/Boarding) institution. This is particularly important for logistical planning.

  3. Explore TVET Opportunities: Many TVET institutes offer specialized training that leads directly to professional certification. Review the Appendix sections for deep dives into these technical programs.

  4. Check Location and District: The register provides location data for every school, helping families understand the proximity of institutions to their homes.
