44 teachers, invigilators, supervisors busted over BECE centre infractions

‎The officials were either caught using phones to take pictures of exam questions to be solved, or using ChatGTP to get answers. This means they were trying to help candidates cheat instead of doing their job of monitoring the exams properly.‎‎

Those arrested came from seven regions. The Ashanti Region had the most cases with 17, followed by Western Region with nine, Greater Accra with six, Central Region with five, Eastern Region with four, and Bono Region with two. Bono East had one case.

‎‎The Public Affairs Officer of WAEC, John Kapi, told Graphic Online that the two cases in Bono Region have been dealt with, and both officials have been fined.

‎‎He said in Bono East Region, two officials were arrested. One was an invigilator caught during the just-ended practical aspect of WASSCE, and the other was involved in the BECE.‎‎Mr Kapi said the invigilator involved in the WASSCE practical pleaded guilty and was fined.

The other one pleaded not guilty and has been granted bail. That case is still pending.‎‎”At Twifo Praso in the Central Region, four of them pleaded guilty and were fined 250 penalty units each. That is about GH¢3,000 each,” he told Graphic Online.‎‎

WAEC has made it clear that it will not tolerate any form of cheating by officials. The council says it is working closely with security agencies to arrest and prosecute anyone caught helping candidates to cheat.

Parents and the public have been asked to report any suspicious activities at exam centres. WAEC believes that these arrests will serve as a strong warning to others who might try to do the same in future examinations.
