Salaries of public sector workers suspended due to inconsistencies in NIA Card numbers

Concerning information reaching this portal indicates that the government, through the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD), has suspended the payment of salaries for some public sector workers due to inconsistencies in their National Identification Authority (NIA) card numbers.

This decision affected the March 2025 salaries of affected staff. The suspension will continue for all staff who are unable to rectify the inconsistencies.

The CAGD detected the inconsistencies when it attempted to integrate the NIA database with the Government of Ghana’s (GoG) payroll system to eliminate “ghost names/accounts” and ensure only legitimate employees receive compensation.

This challenge prompted the CAGD to request the submission of all staff lists (Nominal Roll) of the affected public sector workers.

Rectification Process: Key Steps and Deadlines

The CAGD has therefore put in place procedures and processes to help address the issue and halt the suspension.

Retrieval of Terminated Employees’ Data

Per the procedures outlined, heads of human resources (HR) departments are required to:

  • Retrieve terminated employees’ data from their corporate emails.
  • Verify the accuracy of the retrieved data to ensure it matches current records.
  • Identify any discrepancies or inconsistencies in the data that may have contributed to the suspension of salaries.

Submission of Corrected Records

Institutions must then submit corrected records, including:

  • Explanatory remarks for all affected employees, providing context for the discrepancies or inconsistencies.
  • Updated NIA numbers, ensuring they match current records.
  • Any additional supporting documentation, such as proof of identity or employment verification.

The corrected records must be submitted using the attached template, which provides a standardized format for presenting the required information.
