No Cut-Off Point for 2025 BECE School Placement?

Parents and guardians of 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates, get ready! The school selection process has begun, running from Tuesday, May 27, to Friday, June 6, 2025, under brand new guidelines.

For years, the government of Ghana has implemented various cut-off points for admission and placement into public Senior High Schools, dating back to 1990.

Prior to 2017, BECE candidates were placed based on their aggregate scores in six subjects. This then shifted to four core subjects and two other best subjects. The “cut-off point” evolved from aggregates to raw scores in core subjects and two other best subjects. For instance, before 2017, an aggregate of 36 was widely considered the cut-off, though many students with aggregates worse than 30 rarely secured secondary school enrollment.

Then came the introduction of Free SHS in 2017, which brought a more stringent cut-off: a grade worse than 8 in either Mathematics or English. This meant that any candidate who scored a nine in one or both of these subjects would not be placed in any secondary school.

Now, for the big news! Reliable information available to the Ghana Education News portal indicates that, effective 2025, there will be no cut-off points for BECE candidates!

This exciting change means that candidates will be placed in a school of their choice or be able to self-place, irrespective of their grades and raw scores.

However, it’s important to note: while there’s no fixed cut-off, your raw scores and aggregates from the four core subjects and two best scores from other subjects will still serve as the minimum basis for placement in a merit-based manner. In essence, your aggregates and raw scores will still determine which school you are finally placed in, rather than just your mere preferences.
