Aburi Girls’ SHS water crisis: Education Minister pledges immediate intervention

Mr. Haruna Iddrisu, who is the Minister for Education, has given assurance to the public that government is taking immediate steps to deal with concerns at Aburi Girls’ Senior High School. He also made it clear that the government is also laying out larger plans to solve problems related to infrastructure across the country.

During the time he was speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Wednesday, April 8, the Minister responded to concerns over lack of water and sanitation problems at the school. Mr. Haruna Iddrisu described the situation as  a matter of concern to both government and the Ghana Education Service (GES), but not as serious as commonly reported.

Mr. Haruna Iddrisu, who is the Minister for Education stated that “My attention has just been drawn to the developments at Aburi Girls’ Senior High School, which is of concern to the government and the GES. We will work to remedy it as soon as possible.”

‎Mr. Haruna Iddrisu pointed out that the authorities in the various schools had already taken steps to keep the situation under control, especially concerning faulty toilet facilities.

‎The Minister for Education said “There were two of those toilet facilities. One has been fixed. One is in the process of being repaired, and the repair work will be completed by the weekend. But it’s largely exaggerated if I may, the situation is under control.”

Even with this reassurance, the Minister acknowledged the concerns of parents and students by noting that the issue could have an effect on academic activities  if not resolved quickly.

‎”Legitimately, parents are concerned; students are concerned. It can affect… their academic life and work. And we are mindful of that. Yes, it will be addressed immediately… I would get the Director General of the GES management to move in, and then we mobilize resources to support the institution to fix it,” he said. He further gave an assurance that swift actions are being taken to address the situation
