WAEC BECE Essay Questions with answers: Write a letter to your District Director of Education giving at least two reasons why caning should be banned in schools.

The District Director of Education

Ga East District,

Accra.

Dear Sir,

THE NEED TO BAN CANNING IN SCHOOLS

I write to express my worry about caning in our schools in the district as a means of correcting learners’ unacceptable behaviours.

Caning is commonly used by teachers as a punishment in schools. The application of the case on the student’s buttocks, calves, arms, or palms takes place at assemblies and in front of the class nearly every day.

This corporal punishment used in schools has outlived its importance today, as many developed countries have found better ways to correct learners.

Today, this means of correcting learners is creating problems for teachers, head teachers, and the ministry of education.

There have been instances where teachers in correcting learners through caning have ended up hurting the learner. Teachers have been attacked by youths in some communities because they disciplined a student by caning.

A head teacher in 2018 was killed in this very community by a group of youth who attacked him at home after he had issued 20 lashes to a stubborn and truant student in his school for not taking part in groundworks on the day of reopening.

I suggest that a law be passed to ensure teachers use the cane only as a pointing device and nothing else.

Also, the District disciplinary committee for schools should also come out with modern and safer ways of correcting learners.

Finally, teachers should also be educated on the trauma they cause students and the dangers of being attacked by irate youth.

These measures, I believe, will help ensure learners are not harmed and teachers use more humane ways to correct learners to make our schools more welcoming because some learners have stopped schooling all because of the lashes.

It is my hope that you will take the needed steps to ensure caning is not permitted in our schools.

Yours faithfully,

J.A
