GTEC Clears the Air: Public Universities’ Distance Learning Programmes Remain Accredited
Accra, Ghana — The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has issued an official statement today, 20th April 2026, to correct widespread misinformation regarding the status of distance learning centres operated by public universities in Ghana.
Following recent public discussions that cast doubt on the legitimacy of distance education programmes, the Commission has moved to reassure students and stakeholders that their academic qualifications remain valid, provided they are pursued at approved locations.

Misinformation Corrected: Status of UEW, UCC, UDS, and UG
GTEC has categorically stated that it has not declared the distance learning programmes of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), University of Cape Coast (UCC), University for Development Studies (UDS), and the University of Ghana (UG) as “unapproved places to pursue tertiary education.”
These major public universities remain fully accredited institutions. The Commission clarified that their distance learning programmes are recognized and valid, provided they are delivered at properly situated and adequately resourced study centres.
The “Campus-Specific” Rule: Why Location Matters
While the universities themselves are accredited, GTEC emphasized a critical regulatory distinction: Accreditation is campus-specific and location-dependent.
According to the Commission, approval for distance learning is not a “blanket” authorization. Every individual study centre must meet minimum standards regarding:

- Physical and digital infrastructure;
- Qualified facilitators and academic support systems;
- Robust quality assurance mechanisms.
Consequently, a study centre operating without specific approval from GTEC—even if it claims to be affiliated with an accredited parent university—is not automatically recognized.
Areas of Greatest Concern: Where You Should Not Study
GTEC identified specific locations that have been problematic and do not meet the standards required for tertiary education. Unless these venues have been specifically evaluated and granted approval by GTEC, they are not authorised to host distance learning centres. These include:
- Secondary Schools: Where facilities are often inadequate for tertiary-level distance education.
- Company Training Centres: Which frequently lack proper academic oversight and resources.
- Churches and Makeshift Venues: Which do not meet the required standards for a professional tertiary learning environment.
The Commission’s Stance on Distance Learning
Despite the crackdown on unapproved locations, GTEC reaffirmed its full support for distance learning, describing it as a “viable and strategic mode of tertiary education delivery.” The Commission encourages all universities to regularize their distance learning centres by submitting them for inspection and approval to ensure that the quality of education delivered at these satellite centres matches that of the main campuses.
Public Advisory: Verify Before You Enroll
In light of this clarification, GTEC has issued a strong advisory to prospective students and the general public:
Do not rely on unverified claims or social media summaries. If you are currently enrolled in, or considering, a distance learning programme, you are advised to verify the approval status of your specific study centre directly with the GTEC office or the distance education directorate of your parent university.
Editorial Note
This clarification from GTEC is a crucial step in maintaining the integrity of Ghana’s distance education sector. For students, the message is clear: the universities are accredited, but you must ensure your specific centre of learning has been cleared by the regulator.
