KNUST gifts free laptops to 793 needy students valued at GH¢ 3,965,000 through a project dubbed Support One Needy Student with One Laptop (SONSOL) project. The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has gifted 793 students of the university free laptops with the support of donors.
The gesture by KNUST’s (SONSOL) project is expected to assist the beneficiaries to pursue their university education. The laptops are valued at GH¢ 3,965,000.00.
Students of the university who are pursuing regular, Distance Learning programmes as well as those at the university’s Obuasi campus, and all colleges of the university who are Ghanaians qualify to apply for the support.
However, an applicant must not be in level 100 to 300 at the time of applying for the Free Laptop. Final-year students are not eligible.
Level 100 students who intend to apply must have obtained at least at worse aggregate 18 at the WASSCE to qualify while continuing students, with a minimum Cumulative Weighted Average (CWA) of 55.00 and above, can also put in an application to be considered.
KNUST students who are enjoying some form of scholarship or bursary of not less than GH¢2,000.00 are not eligible for the Free Laptops via the KNUST’s (SONSOL) project.
Students enjoying scholarships such as Mastercard Foundation, the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), Tullow, MTN Foundation, Vodafone, the GET-Fund, MP’s Common Fund and District Assembly Support and the like do not qualify for the Free Laptop.

Speaking at the colourful ceremony, Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Rita Dickson of KNUST appreciated the sponsors of the scheme and called on more support from individuals and the public.
“As we show gratitude to all our donors, we want to encourage many more to come and contribute to this worthy cause.
“We encourage corporate organisations and individuals to come to Macedonia and help by supporting our needy but brilliant students with more laptops.
The KNUST (SONSOL) Free Laptop project is sponsored by corporate organizations such as the State Insurance Company (SIC), KEK Insurance Brokers, Cal Bank Ghana Ltd, Stanbic Bank Ghana PLC, MyTurn, Andysap Furniture, Multinec, and the Ghana Institute of Surveyors.
The rest are the Agricultural Manufacturing Group (AMG), Newmont Ghana, Vesterline Company Ltd, Consolidated Bank Ghana (CBG), SRC KNUST, GRASAG KNUST, NUGS KNUST and Distance Learning Students Association (DLSA).
