Wesley High School for Girls
This SHS was set up by Mrs. Harriet Wrigley in 1836. She was married to the second Methodist Missionary to go to Gold Coast. When the school first opened, there were only 25 girls, and her goal was to teach them the basics of catechism and housekeeping. At the time, classes were held in a hall near Victoria Park called Manse. The school has grown over the years to become one of the best in Ghana. It has helped students do well on the WAEC, keeping up the tradition of doing well.
St. Augustine’s College
This school is in Cape Coast, and it is a school for boys only. It was started in 1930, and its first goal was to train teachers. Since then, a Senior Secondary School has been built there. At the moment, 1500 boys between the ages of 12 and 19 attend the school. It also has 60 full-time teachers, 6 part-time teachers, and close to 80 people who don’t teach. There is a headmaster and two assistants who are in charge of running the school.
Opoku Ware School, Kumasi
This is another school on this list for boys only. There are probably about 1300 students at the school right now. Students can also stay at the school and use the on-site housing and boarding facilities. People who go to Opoku Ware School are between 14 and 18 years old. This school is known as one of the most competitive in Ghana, especially now that education is getting better. In the last few years, the school has turned out some of the smartest people in Ghana, including some well-known people.
St. Peter’s Boys Senior High School
This school is a senior high school for boys that is run by the Roman Catholic Church. It is in the Eastern Region of Ghana, in Nkwatia to be exact. It was started in 1957 by the Divine Word Missionaries, and there were only 36 students and two teachers at the time. Since then, the school has grown and now has a couple of science labs, a computer lab, an office building, and classrooms for its students. There are also 5 dorms at the school, which are home to 6 houses. The subjects at the school fall into three groups: arts, business, and science. The school is known for turning out more doctors than any other in Ghana. Besides this, the school has won many competitions, such as the Ghana Science and Mathematics Quiz.
Accra Academy
This was one of the first high schools in Ghana, and it was also the first high school in the country that was privately owned. It runs a boarding facility and a building for people of all faiths. There are classes in Science, General Arts, Business, Visual Arts, and General Agriculture. At first, the school was meant to help high school students who didn’t have the money to pay for their own education. Africa Almanac said that the school was number 8 in Africa in 2003. The criteria for this award were the quality of the education, the strength of the alumni, how involved the students were, how visible the school was on the internet and in the news, and its profile.
Prempeh College
This school is in Kumasi, and Asantehene Sir Osei Agyemang Prempeh II started it in 1949. This school has come a long way to become one of the most well-known in Ghana. In 2004, 441 of its students graduated from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. This was the most of any year. The school has also won the Toyota Innovation Award and the National Robotics Competition a record three times.
Holy Child School
This school for girls in their second cycle is in Cape Coast, Ghana. In 2003, when the best female student in the SSSCE came from that school, it was named one of the 10 best schools in Africa. The second best student on the 2017 WASSCE also went to this school. Since it opened in 1946, the school has had more than a thousand students between the ages of 14 and 18. People like Akosua Agyapong and Philomena Nyarko are among the famous people who went to this school.
Keta Senior Technical School
This is a public school for both boys and girls. It is in the town of Dzelukope in Ghana’s Keta Municipal District. It has about 2,800 students and about 110 teachers at the moment. It is the biggest school in Ghana’s Volta Region, and it offers classes in the arts, agriculture, home economics, technical studies, and business. The school has won a lot of competitions and has a great reputation among Ghana’s secondary schools.
Mfantsipm School
This is one of the oldest schools in Ghana. It was started in 1876 as a school for boys only, with the goal of helping them grow morally, intellectually, and spiritually. At first, it was called the Wesleyan High School, and James Picot, the first headmaster, was only 18 years old when he got the job. This school gave birth to several other schools in Ghana, such as Prempeh College and Achimota School. The school has won a lot of awards and is known for having a lot of successful graduates.
