Ken Ofori-Atta Apologizes To Ghanaians; Check Out Why

Ghana's economic woes caused by home-grown failures of politicians Ken Ofori-Atta

Ken Ofori-Atta, the Finance Minister who is in trouble, has apologized to Ghanaians for the country’s bad economic situation.

In his opening comments to the ad-hoc committee set up by the Speaker of Parliament to look into the Minority’s claims that he should be removed from office, Mr. Ofori-Atta said that it was not the government’s goal to make life hard for Ghanaians.

The Finance Minister said that the current crisis happened because of how bad Covid-19 was, not because the government was careless.

“I really am sorry. When we set out with such determination in 2017, we didn’t think that Covid-19 would hurt us this much… We haven’t been sitting still, though.”

He also said that, despite the effects of Covid-19, the government has worked hard to make sure that Ghanaians always have power, that roads are fixed, and that government workers get paid on time.

The minority in Parliament filed a motion for a vote of censure against Ken Ofori-Atta. The motion listed seven things that the minister had done wrong, such as having a conflict of interest, being careless with money, which caused the Ghana Cedi to collapse, and being a bad manager of the economy.

In a written request sent before the hearing, the minister asked for more and better information about why the motion was made and questioned the committee’s power.
