Ken Ofori-Atta is Ghana’s Worst Finance Minister; Minister Reveals

Kwame Pianim, a New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart and statesman, has suggested that Ken Ofori-Atta is the worst Finance Minister Ghana has ever had.

Pianim stated in an interview on Okay FM on Monday, January 16, 2023, which GhanaWeb monitored, that Ghana only defaulted on debt payments under the leadership of Ofori-Atta, as finance minister.

He went on to say that Ofori-Atta is solely to blame for the country’s economic woes because he refused to listen to advice.

“We told the entire world in December that we couldn’t pay our debts. We warned Nana Ofori-Atta about the interest rate at which he was borrowing in his early years, but he refused to listen, claiming that he knew what he was doing. We warned him that he was going to lead the country into a ditch, and here we are.

“We’re now attempting to pull the country out of a rut, and he claims it’s all God’s fault… Budgets prepared by him (Ofori-Atta) have always resulted in a loss for the country. He stated that he will use the E-Levy to address the country’s problems, but nothing happened,” he said in Twi.

When asked if Ofori-Atta is Ghana’s worst finance minister, he replied, “Am I the one you’re asking?”

“We have been declared bankrupt; Ghanaians are suffering; pensioners are crying because of the haircuts they are receiving. Some of them are claiming that this is a death sentence and that they will die if they do not take blood pressure medications,” he said.

He went on to say that Ghana’s economy is so broken that it imports cassava from Côte d’Ivoire and vegetables from Burkina Faso.
