Government employees have the opportunity to own homes built by the TDC Development Company Limited (TDC) under the National Homeownership Fund for the rest of their lives.

“We have also put in place a mortgage facility to make it easier for public servants to access it. Right now, if you are a public servant, you are eligible for this Scheme,” said Mr. Samuel Asante, TDC’s General Manager in Charge of Operations.

The Manager stated this while responding to questions from journalists at the State of the Agencies Report media briefing in Accra.

He claimed that banks had an 11 percent per year mortgage facility for public employees that could be spread out over 20 to 25 years.

Mr. Asante urged government employees who want to buy a home to come to the company for proposal letters (pre-offer) so that they can secure a mortgage with the GCB Bank or the Republic Bank.

“If you look at the pricing of the housing units, it is about the lowest in the market right now and so you just need to take advantage and access it,” Mr. Asante added.

A studio apartment, for example, costs $8,000 CEDI equivalent, a one-bedroom is $17,000, a one-bedroom (special) is $24,000, and a two-bedroom is $28,000.

According to Mr. Asante, there was some subsidy component in the price build-up, so it was much cheaper than housing units for sale by private real estate firms.

TDC’s Corporate Planning Manager, Mr. Akwasi Asare Boachie, stated in a presentation that the company had completed and sold all 204 housing units under phase one of the Kpone Affordable Housing Project, while phase two was still ongoing.

According to him, the housing units have all the basic amenities, such as electricity, water supply, drainage, a laundry area, a paved and spacious parking lot, and a 24-hour standby generator.

“We have developed multiple payment portals in collaboration with GCB Bank PLC and GT Bank PLC to make rent and rate payment easier for our clients and thus improve customer satisfaction,” Mr. Boachie explained.

The company has also deployed an SMS alerts and set up a revenue mobilisation taskforce for door-to-door bill distribution and collection as well.

It came as no surprise, then, that the TDC Development Company Limited was named the Ministry of Public Enterprises and State Interests and Governance Authority’s overall best-performing state-owned enterprise in 2020. (SIGA).

In her closing remarks, Ms. Alice Abena Ofori-Atta, Managing Director of TDC, stated that the Company would continue to do its best to provide affordable housing units for Ghanaians as well as to create unique and sustainable urban settlements.
