Tyre Nichols Death: 3 Memphis Emergency Staffs Fired

Three Memphis firefighters have been fired as part of an investigation into Tyre Nichols’ death, shocking the country.

Two paramedics and a driver who responded to the scene, according to officials, did not provide him with adequate care.

After being pulled over for an alleged traffic violation, he was punched, kicked, and hit with a baton.

Five officers were fired and charged with murder. On Monday, it was revealed that two more people had been suspended.

Memphis’s officials identified the three fired employees as Robert Long, JaMichael Sandridge, and Lt Michelle Whitaker, all of whom worked for the fire department.

They’d “failed to conduct an adequate patient assessment of Mr. Nichols,” they claimed.

Officials said Mr. Long and Mr. Sandridge responded to a call about a person being pepper-sprayed and found Mr. Nichols handcuffed on the ground propped up against a police vehicle at 20:41.

According to the fire department, they requested an ambulance. According to the press release, the ambulance was dispatched at 20:46, arrived on the scene at 20:55, and Mr. Nichols was admitted to the hospital at 21:08.

The firings come after Memphis officials announced that Preston Hemphill, 26, one of the officers who initially stopped Mr. Nichols for an alleged traffic violation, had been suspended.

According to Mr. Hemphill’s lawyer, the officer cooperates with the investigation.

Later that day, the Memphis Police Department announced that a second officer had been suspended in connection with Mr. Nichols’ death, though it did not name the officer.

Mr. Nichols died in hospital on January 10, three days after the traffic stop.

Lee Gerald, Mr. Hemphill’s lawyer, stated that his client was present at Mr. Nichols’ initial stop and that the first video of the encounter released to the public came from Mr. Hemphill’s body camera.
