The General Arts Programme offered in most senior high schools in Ghana is undoubtedly the most offered programme at the secondary level. It is a designed programme that involves the study of Literature In English, French, Economics , Geography, History, Government, Christian Religuos Studies , Twi etc.

General Arts as a programme also involves the study and application of technology (ICT in general) and Physical Education (PE)

Depending on each school’s capacity, various combinations of the elective subjects are made for students grouped into various classes. For example, in some schools, Hausa is part of General Arts electives.

These courses above are compulsory and it’s offered by all students, no matter the programme one offers.

Students need to select any four of the courses(elective courses) to add up to the first four core courses. This is called course combination.

Course combination in senior high is prepared by Ghana Education Service to offer various options for senior high students under the same programme. For example, if you apply to study General Arts, you may be placed in a class that offers History, Government, Economics and CRS, and there may be others in another class offering Geography, Elective Maths and Elective Physics. Although these are all General Arts classes, students in these two classes are being prepared for different academic and career paths.
