Is it lawful to pay private school teachers during vacation?

Is it lawful to pay private school teachers during vacation? What is the position of the law and the Labour Commission Department on this?

Some schools in an attempt to cut down the cost of human resources implement unconventional means to deny teachers their remuneration during vacations. In some instances, the schools are unable to pay teachers SSNIT contributions resulting from many factors.

Private Schools and Teachers Salaries

At a meeting between representatives of NCOPST and the Labour Commission Department, the commission stated that it was unlawful for schools to deny salaries because of vacation.

According to the National Council of Private School Teachers (NCOPST), information it has gathered indicates this is the practice in some schools.

Information reaching NCOPST shows that some schools do not pay their workers during vacation

Private schools SSNIT and Tier 2 payment

The National Council of Private School Teachers is a registered (Reg. No. CG059052020) council for all private school teachers in Ghana. It seeks the well-being of all teachers in private schools in Ghana and to help Schools to Develop through School exchange programs, STEM Education, and many more.

To help deal with the challenges schools face in paying their staff, it has embarked on a survey to know schools that cannot afford to pay teachers when they go on vacation, and schools that do not pay SSNIT and Tier 2.

NCOPST is aware that most schools find it difficult to pay Tier 2, especially when new teachers are employed. NCOPST is ready to work hard to make the payment of Tier 2 smooth. Schools can contact us on 0540560643.

NCOPST is calling on all teachers in the private sector who are not paid during vacation to provide the necessary information.
