Ghana Considering Visa Waivers for African Countries: Minister Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey Announces

In a recent interview with Citi News, Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, revealed that Ghana is considering implementing visa waivers for fellow African countries.

Inspired by the recent decisions made by Rwanda, Kenya, and South Africa to allow visa-free travel for Africans, the minister expressed Ghana’s earnest consideration, stating, “we are seriously thinking about” joining the visa-free initiative.

Botchwey shared that the government of Ghana is collaboratively exploring the possibility of drafting a visa waiver agreement with the Ministries of Interior and Tourism.

She emphasized Ghana’s desire to become a “pilgrimage country,” attracting individuals of African descent to connect with their roots.

Moreover, the visa waiver agreement signed between Ghana and South Africa has already taken effect as of November 1, 2023.

This pact allows for unrestricted travel for citizens of both countries, allowing up to a 90-day stay within a calendar year for business and tourism purposes.

The visa waiver agreement is anticipated to boost trade and tourism, symbolizing the strengthening relationship between Ghana and South Africa.

Ghana’s government aims to extend this visa exemption across the continent soon.
