Elections 2024; We’ll not defend unprofessional conduct – GJA warns media practitioners

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has issued a stern warning to media practitioners to avoid unprofessional conduct in the lead up to the 2024 elections.

The GJA President, Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, made the statement at the launch of the “Journalists for Peaceful Discourse” project, which is part of the GJA/US Embassy Ghana Election 2024 project.

The GJA has expressed concerns over the role of the media in inciting violence during the 2020 elections.

A monitoring report by the association found that incitements on media platforms were the primary cause of violence during the elections.

Mr Dwumfour urged media practitioners to be responsible and professional in their reporting of election-related issues.

He emphasized that freedom of expression does not give individuals the right to speak irresponsibly.

“Freedom of expression does not only mean allowing people to speak but also ensuring responsibility.

This is why I keep admonishing media practitioners and institutions to be very professional in the discharge of their duties,” remarked Mr Dwumfour.

He further reiterated that the GJA would not tolerate any unprofessional conduct and would not defend or shield any media practitioner who incites violence or undermines the processes involved in the elections.

The “Journalists for Peaceful Discourse” project aims to provide training and capacity-building to media practitioners to ensure responsible and professional reporting during the election period.

The project also seeks to promote peace and non-violence in the run-up to the elections.
