La General Hospital: MP’s “Christmas Gift” Comment Sparks Outcry
The Member of Parliament for Anyaa-Sowutuom, Dickson Adomako Kissi, is facing backlash for his recent comments on the reconstruction of the La General Hospital. The hospital, demolished by the government years ago, has yet to be rebuilt, prompting frustration among the local community.
During a presentation on the floor of Parliament on November 14, Kissi referred to the initiation of construction on the La General Hospital, as outlined in the 2024 budget, as a “Christmas gift” to the people of La. He expressed optimism about the hospital’s rebirth, emphasizing that the project was slated to be completed within a year and a half.

However, the use of the term “Christmas gift” has stirred controversy, with critics arguing that rebuilding a previously existing infrastructure is not a gift but a rightful provision owed to the community. The La General Hospital had become symbolic of the government’s failure to follow through on critical infrastructure projects while demolishing existing structures that served local communities.
Social media reactions to a video of Kissi’s statement reflected public discontent. Some comments included:
– Mr. YAS (@itsmryas): “Christmas gift? Such impudence!”
– Mr. M.B.A ???? (@NanaKwame_MBA): “You see how they talk? It gives you a clear idea of the selfish nature and irresponsible decision-making bunch of individuals that you’ve chosen to lead you.”
– Matthew (@NhaWinpa): “Nonsense. As if they’re doing the people of La a favor.”
The government had previously faced resistance from the people of La regarding challenges with the loan contracted for the La General Hospital and the transfer of the project to Agenda 111. In the 2024 budget, Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta announced an allocation for the La General Hospital project, with construction scheduled to commence soon.
While the opposition and the local MP expressed delight at the announcement, they remained cautiously optimistic, stating that they would keep their fingers crossed on the government’s promise. The controversy surrounding Kissi’s characterization of La General Hospital ‘s reconstruction as a “Christmas gift” continues to fuel discussions about government accountability and the perception of public service in Ghana.
