The Ghana Education Service has challenged SHS heads to improve 2021 WASSCE results to shame critics of the Free SHS policy of the government.
Ahead of the 2020 WASSCE for school candidates, a section of Ghanaians doubted the ability of the first batch of Free SHS to excel. The result was a testament to the policy. This year, the second batch of beneficiaries of Free SHS will start their examination this August.
Improve 2021 WASSCE results – Heads Challenged
The GES has therefore challenged Heads of Senior High Schools in the 5 Northern Regions to ensure their students excel in the 2021 WASSCE for school candidates.
Prof Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa who made the call at a stakeholder’s meeting said excellent 2020 WASSCE results of the first batch of the free SHS beneficiaries had generated positive discourse in the academic and social sphere.
“The stunning results of the 2020 maiden free SHS candidates had generated positive discourse in the academic and social sphere as Ghanaians assess the impact of the policy of the free secondary education,” he stated on Friday.
The Director-General challenged the schools to perform better in the upcoming examination with at least a ten percent improvement in results obtained by the 2020 WASSCE batch in all subjects from the regions.
“I admire your courage and tenacity to bring up our future leaders in the best of standards required of the 21st-century students”, Profesor Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa commended express his profound gratitude to all teachers and headmasters/headmistress in the region.
He disclosed that the government has initiated processes to ensure the ‘delayed’ intervention allowances due to teachers are paid soon.
“These allowances are genuine promises by government as part of efforts in motivating staff in ensuring sustained academic pursuits in the government flagship educational policy of FSHS,” the Director-General stated.

This year’s West African Examinations Council (WAEC) assessment for secondary school candidates starts on Monday, August 16, 2021, to mid-September across the country.
