Ghana Education News |Over 470 teen mothers back to school in Central Region
In the Central Region, a total of 473 pregnant or nursing females have returned to school according to the representative of the National Girls Education Unit (GEU) of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Mrs. Philomena Panyin Buckman.

According to her, the Regional Advocacy Campaign Team, created to educate duty bearers and well-meaning stakeholders on the necessity of enabling school-age children to return to their individual classes to complete their academic work, was responsible for the success of the initiative. Mrs Buckman was speaking during a UNICEF-funded evaluation of the ‘back to school campaign’ initiative from last year.
This team was also created as part of GES’ intervention to secure the return of all pre-tertiary students, notably pregnant or nursing moms, and to make them interested in completing their education.
“ We are seeing results because you availed yourself to be used, we are so proud of you and we know through your help we will achieve more”. She said , indicating that this was the result of the good work done.
Their fight should continue, she said, highlighting the “Pregnancy Rentry Policy,” which requires pregnant schoolgirls to remain in the classroom.
“We still have a good number of these girls on the street, some have engaged in economic activities and we need to bring them all back to their classrooms “ she added.
Mr Francis Eyison, a representative of the Regional Advocacy Team, spoke about some of the strategies used to ensure the return of these students, including donating educational materials to those in need and educating teachers and students to avoid stigmatization while using differentiated teaching methods to meet the needs of all.

To help ease the load on young moms, he also asked parents and caregivers to help by taking care of their grandkids, in order to encourage them to join their colleagues in the classroom.

Mother-to-bes and pregnant students require help re-entering school, according to Mrs. Buckman. She said that pregnant females enrolled in the free Senior High School (SHS) must report to the school of placement, provide a stable phone number, and return to school as soon as possible following childbirth.
