Dr Bawumia pledges free tertiary education scholarships for PWDs

In the latest Ghana Education News in relation to Dr. Bawumia, the Flagbearer of the NPP has pledged to initiate scholarships that would provide free tertiary education to persons with Disabilities (PWDs).

This was said by Bawumia during a meet up with clergy members of Sehwi-Wiawso, a town in the western North region of Ghana.

The NPP Flagbearer enlightened that this scholarship Scheme would be fully funded by some allocation made to the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat and the Ghana Education Trust Fund AKA GETFUND.

Bawumia’s Tertiary Scholarship for Persons with Disabilities would cover costs such as tuition and accomodations.

“We are already providing scholarships to a wide array of individuals, but it is essential to dedicate a portion of these funds specifically to assist PWDs in accessing higher education,” Dr. Bawumia said.

Outside the conversation around intentions for Persons with Disabilities, Dr. Bawumia made known to the public that he is the Patron of Lepers Aid Ghana, this he believes, is one of the drivers for this initiative.

The current Vice President also shared his insights on some of the works he has done to help Persons with Disabilities in his administration. He believes, Persons with Disabilities are vulnerable People and should be treated a Priority.

In other related news, the Ghana Education Service ( GES ) has also taken an initiative to enhance academic opportunities for Persons with Disabilities at the Basic Level.

While on Peace’s FM’s “kokrokoo” show, Director General of GES Prof. kwasi Opoku Amankwa detailed government’s plan to develop policies that would help solve problems of Persons with Disabilities and Special Needs at the basic level of education up to secondary schools.

According to the GES Director General, this plan is a developmental strategy of inclusion which ensures no student, regardless of their challenges, be it physical or intellectual, be left out of education.

“The majority of special needs schools are at the basic level, but integrating them into the Free SHS policy acknowledges the extra resources and specialized attention required for these students,” he emphasized.

The Ghanaian government, through the Ghan Education Service, is set to give out further information about its intentions to be inclusive in education by initiating policies that would help Persons with Disabilities who are pursuing education.

These policies reflect a growing recognition of the importance of education in empowering individuals and shaping an inclusive society.
