Another Fire Service Training School, Making Three Nationwide

Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia inaugurated the 2nd National Fire Service Training School constructed by the Akufo-Addo Government on Tuesday, increasing the total number of Fire Service Training Schools in Ghana to three.
Before 2017, Ghana had only one Fire Service Training School situated in Accra. On January 19, 2024, the Vice President inaugurated the second Fire Service Training School in Wungu, located in the North East Region.
During the commissioning ceremony of the third Fire Service Training School in Duayaw-Nkwanta, Tano North District of the Ahafo Region, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the Government’s dedication to enhancing the fire service and safeguarding lives and property.
Dr. Bawumia expressed his pride and gratitude during the historic commissioning of the first phase of the Duayaw Nkwanta Fire Academy and Training School. He highlighted the Government’s commitment to citizen safety and well-being through this milestone.
The Vice President reiterated the Government’s promise in 2017 to increase the number of training schools for the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) from one to four since independence, as evidenced by the establishment of these new facilities.

Dr. Bawumia emphasized the swift progress made by the Government by commissioning the second and third Fire Academy and Training School in Duayaw Nkwanta, Ahafo Region, within a short period after the Wungu Fire Academy and Training School.
He concluded by stating that the event signifies a significant advancement in the Government’s dedication to protecting its citizens, showcasing unwavering commitment.
The newly-established training institution boasts state-of-the-art training amenities and gear, which includes two hydraulic platforms for reaching the 16th floor to combat fires and conduct rescues for critical establishments like the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS). Dr. Bawumia characterizes this as a strategic step to guarantee the protection of lives, businesses, livelihoods, and assets.
The Vice President also emphasized the substantial assistance the government has extended to the Ghana National Fire Service, which encompasses the supply of modern equipment and the enhancement of the Service’s human resource capacity over the past 7 years to effectively respond to emergencies.
Included in the equipment are command vehicles, contemporary fire engines, drones, rapid intervention vehicles, buses, appropriate personal protective equipment (APPEs), as well as rescue and firefighting gear.
“This investment in cutting-edge equipment is in line with the government’s objective to empower the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) to fulfill its legal obligation of safeguarding lives and properties.
“These resources will not only bolster the Ghana National Fire Service’s ability to manage various and intricate firefighting situations but also contribute to the general safety and security of our neighborhoods.”

Dr. Bawumia further stated that the assistance has had a positive impact on the operations of the Ghana Fire Service.
“In 2022, the Service recorded 6154 fires compared to 5973 fires in 2023, resulting in a 2.94% decrease rate. This achievement clearly demonstrates the effectiveness of the government’s programs, assistance, training, and the unwavering dedication of the firefighting personnel,” the Vice President remarked.
Regarding the Service’s workforce, Dr. Bawumia highlighted that the current administration has nearly doubled the Fire Service’s personnel from the figure it inherited in 2017.
“It is unprecedented in the history of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) for a single government to recruit over 7000 individuals, elevating the workforce to over 15000 in just 7 years.
The NPP Government, under the leadership of His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has successfully spearheaded this achievement, showcasing the administration’s dedication to improving the capabilities of our firefighting force to deliver top-notch emergency firefighting and rescue services to the citizens of our nation.
Despite the significant contributions and accomplishments made, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the need for further efforts to safeguard lives and properties, ensuring that the government remains fully committed to assisting the Service in achieving its goals and responsibilities.
Nana Boakye Bonsu, the Acting President of the Duayaw Nkwanta Traditional Council, expressed appreciation to the government for establishing the training school.
The Chief Fire Officer, representing the Service, conveys gratitude to the Government for the substantial support provided, which has greatly enhanced their operational effectiveness.
The 3rd Fire Service Academy and Training School, constructed by the Akufo-Addo Government, is set for inauguration in the Eastern Region.
