Asogli State rejects renaming Ho Technical University after Ephriam Amu

The Asogli State Chiefs have publicly voiced their strong objection to the government’s proposal of renaming the Ho Technical University in honor of Dr. Ephraim Amu.

This opposition by the Asogli State was communicated during a press briefing held on April 22, 2024, highlighting a significant discord between the traditional authorities and the decision-makers involved.

In February 2018, the proposal to change the university’s name was first introduced, immediately sparking controversy.

The Chiefs, representing the Asogli State, criticized the decision for its lack of stakeholder engagement, specifically the omission of consultations with the Asogli State Council—the custodians of the land and key stakeholders in the region.

Togbe Adzi Lakle Howusu XII, a prominent figure within the Asogli State Council, conveyed the community’s dismay, calling the decision regrettable, ill-conceived, and disrespectful.

He stressed that such a unilateral decision fails to acknowledge the historical identity and legacy of the institution, which has been a cornerstone of education in the region.

The Asogli State Council’s stance is clear: they see the renaming as an unfortunate, misplaced, and disrespectful act that undermines the relationship between the local community and educational institutions.

They are advocating for a more inclusive approach to decision-making that respects the traditions and views of all stakeholders involved.

This disagreement underscores a broader issue of governance and local autonomy, where the voices of local communities and their leaders are seeking recognition and respect in administrative decisions that affect their heritage and future.
