Akufo-Addo Outlines Top 15 Achievements in The Education Sector

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has outlined top fifteen achievement in the education sector under his government.

He stated that, his government’s commitment to the education has been exemplary, because they are of the firm belief that quality education is the enabler that the difference between developed and developing nation.

Among the top achievements is the improvement in the teacher education comprising the Ghana Teacher Prize which is being celebrated on World Teachers Day.

The president is glad that his government took a keen interest in this award scheme, and rebranded it to meet global standards.

He stated again that, this is the sixth edition of Ghana Teacher Prize after the rebranding of the Best rebranding of the Best Teacher Awards.

Since the rebranding in 2018, not a year passed without a Ghanaian teacher coming through at global or continental teacher awards competitions.

Speaking at the sixth edition of Ghana Teacher Prize celebration on October 5, 2023 to commemorate teachers for their immeasurable contribution towards the provision of inclusive, equitable, quality education and lifelong learning for all, he highlighted some top achievements in education sector.

Mother and daughter ‘married’ to the same man share experience

Speaking to Afrimax, Tumaini said it was never her intention to share a man with her mother, but she was threatened by her father to shun his parental responsibilities.

According to her, their first encounter happened while her mother was away in the farm, and since then, it was another and yet another sexual romp.

Kukumba was forced into believing she was to blame, for spending most hours in the farm and shuning her sexual duties.

Due to her self-blaming, she agreed for daughter to be officially her husband’s mistress and they have together welcomed 12 children.

Speaking on their living condition, Kukumba who was in tears said she is forced to live peacefully with them so as not to lose her husband and the financial help he provides.

On his side, the husband involved, Ezekiel said he is “proud my family is living peacefully. I apologised to them and they have accepted so everything is fine. My wife is happy with me and I am happy with my family as well”

Although he claims to have repented and ready to live a normal life, Ezekiel still asks his daughter to sleep with him, but she continues to deny the troubling request.

WAEC Update on 2023/2024 BECE candidates scripts marking

The management of WAEC (the West African Examinations Council) has scheduled on Monday, October 9, 2023, to commence marking of 2023 BECE candidates scripts, a spokesperson for the non-profit making organisation has disclosed.

In an interview with Daily Graphic, the Examinations Council official said has initiated the coordination process which involved bringing the examiners together to familiarise themselves with the marking scheme of the 2023 BECE.

Citing financial issues as a challenge confronting the marking process which formed part of the second process of the examination, he said “They will finish the coordination on Friday and by October 9, the actual marking will start.”

“So we have started the process, but what we are saying is that if monies are not released, we may not be able to complete it,” the Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi told the Daily Graphic newspaper in an exclusive interview.

A total of 600,714 candidates, comprising 300,323 boys and 300,391 girls from 18,993 Junior High Schools participated in the 2023 BECE for School Candidates which began on Monday, August 7, 2023, to Friday, August 11, 2023.

With regard to the 2023 BECE for Private Candidates, a total entry figure of 1,743 candidates was recorded. This is made up of 889 males and 854 females. This year’s figure is 5.4% higher than the entry figure of 1,132 for 2022.

The 2023 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for School Candidates was held at 2,137 examination centres across the country, while 15 centres mainly in the regional capitals were used for the BECE for Private candidates.

In a related development, the Ghana Education Service says it will cancel the 2023 BECE results of unqualified but registered candidates who will participate in the forthcoming national examination for final-year Junior High School (JHS) students only.

In a statement copied from the media platform, the management of the Education Service cautioned public school heads to desist from registering private school students or individuals not qualified to write the BECE for School examination.

“Registration of candidates for the BECE for school candidates is strictly for students in Junior High School (JHS) Three only. The second-year Junior High School students are ineligible to register and write the BECE School,” the GES stated.

It added “It has come to the attention of GES that some public basic school heads are registering unqualified students for 2023 BECE which is illegal. Anyone found to have registered illegally will have his/her BECE results nullified.”

After the long awaiting, 20,000 examiners have been tasked to mark the 2023 BECE and WASSCE scripts of candidates who sat for the just-ended national and international examination, in this article we will elucidate with details.

Speaking to Academic-Week, the Examinations Council official said his outfit usually commences the marking of the examination scripts three (3) weeks after the conduct of the last paper of any examination.

“Over 20,000 examiners across the country will partake in the marking of the national and international examination scripts.

The marking process of the current BECE & WASSCE scripts usually starts 3 weeks after the administration of the examination,” he stated.

He said the non-profit organization (WAEC) this year has put in place adequate measures to ensure contact details of examiners contracted to mark the the current BECE & WASSCE scripts do not leak as it happened some time ago.

In another story, the not-for-profit-making organization (WAEC) says it will increase supervisors’ and invigilators’ allowance per session only if candidates’ examination registration fee absorbed by the government is augmented.

A spokeswoman for the West African Examination Council – WAEC, Agnes Teye Cudjoe at a press briefing said any additional allowance introduced would have to be factored into the budget leading to an increase in the fees paid by candidates.

“The budget operated by WAEC to cover the marking of the current BECE & WASSCE scripts only provides allowance per session for supervisors and Invigilators. Any additional allowance introduced would have to be factored into the budget leading to an increase in the fees paid by candidates,” she said.

WAEC’s comment comes after the Education think tank – Africa Education Watch in its 2021 WASSCE monitoring report suggested for the Council to increase the fees paid to supervisors and invigilators for invigilation and supervision.

The Education Watch in the WASSCE report copied to Academic-Week indicated allowances given to supervisors and invigilators when increased and paid on time would not make them compromise the invigilation of an examination.

“At present, WAEC pays external supervisors an amount of GH¢25 per session with invigilators earning GH¢14. This paltry amount is not even enough to cover transportation costs for many supervisors and invigilators,” it said.

EduWatch stated that the current GH¢25.00 per session for external supervisors and GH¢14.00 for invigilators, which even ends up arriving close to a year after the conduct of a WAEC examination, is a complete demotivator.

“To motivate supervisors and invigilators, WAEC must increase their fees and ensure prompt payment of the same. The current GH¢25 per session for an external supervisor and GH¢14 for an invigilator is a demotivator,” EduWatch added.

It is reported that although the community has a members of between 200 and 300, they believe that the real El Molo tribe are with only 99 members, comprising men, women and children.

Their language is El Molo, belonging to the Cushitic branch of the Afro-Asiatic language family.

El Molo members are noted to be a unique tribe because of their cultural, customary and spiritual beliefs, one of which is that when a baby is born, someone else must die to keep a balance with only 99 members between life and death.

Afrimax English visited the El Molo community recently to shed light on their culture, livelihood, and access to necessary amenities among others.

It is the belief of El Molo people that their population must not exceed ninety-nine (99) members, so as children are being born, some people who have had the chance to live must die to keep the population below 100.

Once a baby is born, the elders of the tribe are consulted and those who have lived long and fulfilling lives are chosen to die.

They accept to die in good fate because it’s deemed to be a recognition of the life cycle and respect for their ancestors who passed on the customs and beliefs to them.

According to them, the spirits and the cosmos guide them in deciding who dies next. It is unclear if the chosen people die naturally or how they give way to the new babies.

Afrimax English reports that at one point, their population reached hundred (100) but it didn’t last for 24 hours because it was considered a sacrilege. It is unclear how it was quickly rectified.

Since nobody knows who will die after a child is born to keep the El Molo population in check, they are always virtually sitting on tenterhooks. Interestingly.

If someone falls ill during the period of the child being born, he or she becomes restless even if he or she is not the one appointed to die.

Known for being very spiritual and worshipping of WAAK/WAHK, El Molo are mostly fishermen who depend on the lake Turkana for food and livelihood.

Frequent droughts, lack of farming lands, good drinking water and food reportedly make it difficult for their community to contain more people.

It is unclear if these informed their ancestors to place a ceiling on the population, which was bequeathed to them.

Once there lived Toma (as I would love to call him – in photo 1) in the Tafi-Atome Monkey Sanctuary that attempted Once upon a coup in Tafi.

Years ago, this young man attempted a failed coup attempt and consequently got expelled from his troop and any other troop. Once upon a failed coup in Tafi

Let’s rewind…

The Tafi-Atome Monkey Sanctuary is populated by a special monkey species called the Mona Monkey. Similar to humans, these monkeys live in clans.

There are currently 16 different clans, and they are all led by a leader who has successfully fought and won all other fellow males who express interest after the death of a previous leader. That’s interesting, right?

Naturally, no troup exceeds 140 members, so if they reach 140, all procreation after that must form another troup, charley!

Now, to our friend Toma. The young man since childhood has been a ‘Mensah’ and fights everyone. He grew up to become a troup leader of his clan. His thirst for trouble grew stronger.

One day, he took it a notch higher. He attacked the Commando, attempt of a coup – who’s the King in the forest. Commando does not belong to any clan.

The battle became very fierce as all 15 other troup leaders came together to fight him. He sustained life-threatening wounds but survived.

His coup attempt was believed to be inspired by three things; power, fame, and sex. Apparently, Commando has four wives and always only moves with them. No other Monkey dines with these four wives or make advances to them.

Imagine me approaching Addo Dee’s Maa Becky. Who born dog?

Toma became ostracised. He eats, moves, and sleeps alone with no female companion. That means… (You geriiiit).

Well, Toma has yet to repent. Till today, he still attacks members of other troops, to still establish his dominance.

“Egbɔ kuku be yedze ŋɛ ɖi na hɛ” (the dead got syndrome abi?)

In his 40s now, … he has managed to gather 7 more accomplices. These are also believed to be fellow outcasts for one reason or the other.

How else does someone become an outcast?

There’s a general rule that no one falls from a tree branch in the act of training, play, or sleep. It is considered a taboo.

And all troop leaders must enforce this attempt of coup in Tafi. It is like saying no human should stumble and fall. Eii. Awell…

That is why it is believed that the other 7 group members of…are persons who have committed such a taboo.

They are considered the most dangerous troup in the forest because of their very aggressive nature.

Well, as they say, never get into a fight with someone who has no reputation to protect. They’ll do you dirty cos they’ve got nothing to lose.

A word to a wise…

FUN FACT!

No one sees a dead monkey. They bury their own dead. Only in rare cases are a few bodies found. Those ones are given a befitting burial by the people in the monkey cemetery, with their graves marked.
The Commando has a special sound it makes once in a while. (ou-houu) which echoes through the entire community, with its meaning.

An ‘ou-houu’ once, means sad news is about to occur to someone in the village (being it an accident, death, strange ailment, etc.) So diviners are quickly asked to consult at the monkey shrine to find out who, for a possible pacification.

If he does ‘ou-houu’ twice means he’s checking on the safety of all 16 troop leaders. They in-turn, respond ‘maa-maa-maa’ as they rush to assembly in the middle of the forest to meet him. The absence of a troop leader signifies danger, and warriors are deployed to search for him.

If he does it three times, it means a good omen is about falling on someone or the entire community
