Baba Yara Stadium is for Asanteman, relocate it if you can – Kotoko official to NSA boss
The Baba Yara Stadium, a cherished and iconic venue in Kumasi, has long been a focal point for passionate football fans. However, a recent dispute between the National Sports Authority (NSA) and Kotoko officials has brought to light a debate over the ownership and ticketing policies of this historic stadium.
A member of Kotoko’s Communication Team, Adu Acheampong, boldly declared that the Baba Yara Stadium belongs to Asanteman, not the government. His impassioned statement serves as a reminder of the deep-rooted connection between this stadium and the people of Asanteman.
Acheampong has conveyed a clear message to the NSA, urging them to refrain from imposing e-tickets on Kotoko and instead embrace traditional ticketing methods. In his own words, he challenged the NSA by saying, “Come and carry your stadium to where your tickets are. The stadium belongs to Asanteman. If he claims it is not ours, he should relocate it to where it belongs and let’s see.”

This declaration comes in the wake of a dispute between Kotoko officials and Prof Twumasi, the NSA boss. The bone of contention is the type of tickets to be used during matches held at the Baba Yara Stadium. While the NSA is advocating for e-tickets, Kotoko has taken a firm stance in favor of printing and selling physical tickets at the gate.
Acheampong further emphasized their position by pointing out past agreements, stating, “He should go and seek the truth about Tamale and Sunyani stadiums. We had told them we won’t print the physical tickets, that they should print it for us and we sell it, but since they have refused, we will produce them and sell the same.”
The Baba Yara Stadium, also known as the Kumasi Sports Stadium, stands as one of Ghana’s largest sporting venues, with a seating capacity of 40,528. Primarily used for football matches, it has also hosted athletics events. It is a place where the heartbeat of Ghanaian football reverberates, and it serves as the home ground for Asante Kotoko, one of Africa’s most popular sports clubs, and King Faisal.
This iconic stadium played a significant role in the Ghana CAN 2008 tournament, with its official reopening on Sunday, December 16, 2007, after extensive renovations. Its rich history and deep ties to the people of Asanteman make it more than just a stadium; it is a symbol of passion, pride, and unity.
The ongoing debate surrounding the Baba Yara Stadium reminds us of the emotional and historical significance of this sporting arena. It is a place where football transcends the boundaries of a mere game, connecting the past, present, and future of Asanteman’s love for the beautiful game.
