By simply evaluating the grades obtained from school mocks, parents would notice that their wards are not making aggregates between 06 and 10.

For instance, students who want to study General Science must be able to earn excellent grades in science and mathematics. However, when your grades in these subjects are subpar, you cannot compete for available slots in a given school. Other students are competing for the same placements with Grades 1 or 2 in Integrated Science and Mathematics; hence, you face the high probability of missing placement in a Category A or B school.

3. Accommodation Choice

During school placement, a specific mechanism applies: after a student achieves the required raw score for a particular school and programme of choice, they will not be placed unless there is an available slot matching their accommodation choice.

Most BECE graduates want to be boarding students; hence, nearly everyone selects boarding for every school they choose. Let us assume you want to study General Science at Achimota SHS. If you have the required raw score for Achimota, but the school has already filled its boarding capacity—even if it still has 100 slots available for day students—you will not be placed in Achimota simply because your accommodation choice does not match what is open.

What this simply means is that many students will miss placement entirely because they insisted on boarding school. This explains why a student with a good grade who wants to gain admission into PRESEC Legon may miss out, while another student who chooses the same school and opts for day status gets placed.

4. Oversubscription for a Given School

Finally, students frequently miss their first and second school choices because these institutions are highly competitive and chosen by an overwhelming majority. For instance, some Category A and B schools can admit a maximum of 800 SHS1 students, yet the number of applicants choosing them often exceeds 10,000.

This means that 9,800 out of those 10,000 candidates will never get the chance to be placed in that school because the institution lacks the capacity to admit even 10% of those who applied. Unfortunately, many choose these schools hoping that luck will prevail. Well, placement is not based on luck, taste, or personal preference.
