Comply with 15% tertiary fee increment charges – Education Minister directs UG
The directive from the Ghana Tertiary Education Council (GTEC) to all Universities to charge not more than 15% increment of their 2021–2022 fees came as a relief to stakeholders, however, universities such as the University of Ghana charged more than the approved fees and went ahead to justify the increment.
However, the Education Minister, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum has added his voice to the call and asked the Management of the University of Ghana (UG) to comply with the 15 percent increment in tertiary fees.
This call follows an engagement between the Minister of Education and all public universities in the country after NUGS raised red flags of increased fees above the approved rate.
Per the investigations conducted, the University of Ghana is implementing about a 37% increment of fees.
Following the public outcry, the University said it will engage its Council to deliberate on the 15% increment and how feasible it could be for the school to implement.
“We have also heard from the University of Cape Coast about fees that they have taken in cases where fees were over 15%, they are doing refunds. They want to move within the 15% as mandated by Parliament,” Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum told JoyNews after the meeting on Thursday.
Three other public universities; the University of Cape Coast, the University of Education, Winneba and the University of Mines and Technology have all complied with the directive on fee charging.
