Curfew in Accra in honour of late Ga Manye
Accra is set to observe a solemn period of remembrance and celebration in honor of the late Ga Manye, Naa Dedei Omaedru II. The Ga Traditional Council has announced a comprehensive plan to commemorate her life, including imposing a curfew and restrictions on trading in the city.
The Ga Mantse, on behalf of the council, shared the details of the funeral ceremony and the measures put in place to ensure the respectful observance of this occasion.
One of the key features of the funeral process is the ban on other funerals during the Ga Manye’s ceremony. This is to ensure that the focus remains on paying tribute to the late queen mother and that there is no interference from other events.
The funeral events commenced on October 15, 2023, and will continue until October 30, 2023. The main funeral, which will include customary rites and rituals, is scheduled to begin on October 23, 2023.

A significant aspect of the commemoration is a curfew to be observed on October 24 and 25, 2023. During this period, residents of Accra are expected to remain indoors after 6 pm to allow the performance of important customary rituals in honor of the Ga Manye.
The restrictions also extend to trading activities within the city. Only traders selling essential goods like food and pharmacy items will be allowed to operate during this time. All other shops and markets are expected to be closed on the specified dates to ensure that the focus remains on the funeral events.
Between October 26 and 27, traders are requested to keep their shops closed. However, those selling essential items such as food and operating pharmacy shops will be permitted to open.
The final resting place for the Ga Manye, Naa Dedei Omaedru II, will be on October 28, 2023, marking the conclusion of the funeral proceedings. This period provides an opportunity for the people of Accra to come together, pay their respects, and celebrate the life and contributions of their late queen mother. The curfew and restrictions serve as a testament to the significance of this commemoration and the importance of upholding tradition and customs during such events.
