‘I was taken out of context’ – Sanitation minister
‘I was taken out of context’: In the wake of recent devastating floods in the Volta Region of Ghana, the Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Freda Prempeh, has responded to criticism regarding her recent comments about the victims’ evacuation efforts.
During a Ghana Water Company Limited event on October 23, Minister Freda Prempeh suggested that relevant state agencies had warned residents who were at risk of being affected by the spillage of the Akosombo and Kpong Dams to evacuate. However, she mentioned that these warnings appeared to have fallen on deaf ears, with some individuals refusing to leave their homes.
Her statement, which seemed to place partial responsibility on the affected individuals for not evacuating, sparked outrage and backlash on social media, with some accusing her of lacking empathy and others deeming her comments irresponsible.
Facing this backlash, Minister Freda Prempeh has clarified her statements, stating that she was taken out of context. She conveyed this message via the Institute of Public Relations WhatsApp platform.

The ongoing controversy has involved several key figures, including Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Member of Parliament for North Tongu, one of the most affected constituencies. Ablakwa sharply criticized the minister, demanding more concrete details regarding the evacuation process. He emphasized the pain, depression, and devastation experienced by the affected people and urged the government to stop making statements that seem to blame the victims.
The recent flooding in the Volta Region has raised concerns and led to discussions about disaster preparedness, infrastructure, and government responses. The clarification from Minister Freda Prempeh aims to provide context to her earlier remarks and prevent any misinterpretation of her intentions in addressing the ongoing situation. The public will continue to closely monitor developments and official responses as efforts are made to address the challenges posed by the flooding.
