Dam spillage: USAID donates GH₵1.1m to victims
- USAID and Government Collaborate to Support Akosombo Dam Spillage Victims.
In response to the devastating consequences of the Akosombo Dam spillage in Ghana, the United States Ambassador to Ghana, Virginia Palmer, has made a significant announcement. She revealed that the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is contributing more than GH₵1.1 million to support Ghana’s relief efforts in the wake of this calamity.
The announcement was made during the launch of the US Global Water Strategy High Priority Country Plan in Accra, demonstrating the commitment of the United States to assist Ghana during this challenging period.
Notably, Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, representing the Ministry of Finance, also stepped forward to make a noteworthy contribution of GH₵2 million towards the relief efforts. His contribution underscores the collaborative efforts between the government and the Volta River Authority (VRA) in addressing the multifaceted challenges faced by those affected by the spillage.

This joint initiative is designed to provide immediate relief measures for the impacted communities and to explore long-term solutions that will facilitate the safe return of residents to their homes. In a remarkable display of solidarity, the Finance Ministry’s staff contributed an additional GH₵50,000 to further bolster the collective effort. This act of generosity exemplifies the unity and determination of various stakeholders to provide essential aid to the affected individuals and communities.
The spillage from the Akosombo Dam has had severe repercussions, displacing many residents and causing extensive damage to homes and infrastructure.
