Dam spillage: VRA supplies medicine to some affected communities
The Volta River Authority (VRA) has taken significant steps to provide relief and support to communities affected by the recent dam spillage from the Akosombo and Kpong Dams. At a press conference in Accra, Ing. Obeng Kenzo, Deputy CEO of Operations & Engineering at VRA, announced that they have supplied medicines worth GHC 1.5 million to these communities.
VRA’s Environmental department is actively engaged in the affected areas, working closely with the victims to provide assistance and relief. The organization’s commitment extends to all those impacted, including those staying with friends and relatives. VRA’s Hospital team is on the ground addressing health concerns and providing support during this challenging period.
As part of their relief efforts, large water tanks have been provided in the affected communities, with water being sourced from neighboring areas to fill these tanks. Additionally, sachet water is being supplied for drinking purposes. To address the issue of inadequate lighting in certain safe havens, VRA, in collaboration with the Ministry of Energy, has distributed around 5,000 solar lamps to the affected communities. The organization remains committed to assisting the affected communities throughout this period.

In addition to these measures, VRA has provided portable toilets, with approximately 40 units distributed to various communities. To address food shortages and support self-sufficiency, food supplies and ingredients have also been provided to those living in the affected areas.
The controlled spillage of the Akosombo Dam became necessary due to rising water levels upstream, which were primarily attributed to heavy rainfall. This action was essential to maintain the dam’s integrity and prevent potential disasters. However, the unintended consequences of the spillage, including catastrophic flooding in fishing communities, have resulted in severe hardships and suffering for residents. Houses have been submerged, fish cages with significant fish stocks have been washed away, and many fish have perished due to high turbidity and shock.
VRA’s ongoing efforts to provide relief, medical support, clean water, lighting, and sanitation demonstrate their commitment to alleviating the hardships faced by the affected communities during this challenging time.
