Education Director appeals for renovation of Pelungu kindergarten block
Magdalene Wompakeah, the Nabdam District Director of Education, is pleading for renovation of the Pelungu Kindergarten block.
Labeled as a “death trap” by the concerned director, the building’s dilapidated state presents a harrowing risk to the youngest of learners and their educators, spotlighting a critical juncture between safety and education in the region.
Conversations with the education director, Mary Magdalene Wompakeah, about the Pelungu kindergarten block
During a revealing conversation with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Pelungu, Mary Magdalene Wompakeah underscored the dire necessity for immediate action to refurbish the kindergarten block. The physical assessment of the structure unveiled a distressing scenario—cracks stretching ominously from the foundation to the gables, an architectural cry for help that cannot be ignored. With the destruction of doors and windows compounding the building’s vulnerability, the safety and well-being of the pupils have been thrust into jeopardy.
The reality of the situation was further illuminated by the voice of Bright Tambon, a KG 2 pupil, who shared with GNA the restrictions placed on students’ playtime activities within the classroom.
The fear of the building collapsing has led to a necessary yet disheartening ban on leisure activities within what should be a safe learning environment, showcasing the tangible impacts of the infrastructure woes on the students’ school experience.
In response to the looming crisis, Madam Agnes Anamoo, the District Chief Executive, has taken a proactive stance. By relocating the pupils to alternate classrooms, an interim measure has been taken to ensure their safety.
However, the longer-term resolution hangs in the balance, with considerations oscillating between extensive renovations under the SOCO project or the more drastic measure of demolishing the existing structure to pave the way for a new building.
This decisive action underscores the gravity of the predicament and the imperative to secure a safe educational setting before the advent of the rainy season further exacerbates the risks.

The government’s dedication to fostering a conducive learning environment has been affirmed, yet the challenges that lie ahead are vast and require a collaborative effort. Mary Magdalene Wompakeah ‘s appeal extends beyond governmental intervention, reaching out to non-governmental organizations passionate about education to join hands in safeguarding the futures of Pelungu’s youngest learners.
This collective approach not only highlights the importance of educational infrastructure but also calls upon a shared responsibility to nurture and protect the well-being of every child, ensuring they have a strong and secure foundation from which to grow and learn.
