Education Minister assures universities of academic freedom

Haruna Iddrisu, the Minister of Education has recapitulate the government’s dedication to ensuring that there is academic freedom in the university community. Haruna Iddrisu said academic freedom fosters smooth university operations and promotes the efficient functioning of the governing councils and management.
He assured that President John Dramani Mahama, supported by his Vice-President, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang, is strongly dedicated to empowering university councils and management to perform their legitimate duties without obtrusion.
He was speaking at the University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC) second session of its third congregation ceremony at its South Legon Campus, to graduate its postgraduate students.
“According to that, the Ministry of Education will not interfere with legal operations of universities” Mr Haruna said in a speech read on his behalf by the Technical Advisor to the Minister and the Chair of the National Education Forum. Prof. George K. T. Oduro.
In all, fifty-eight and one hundred and forty-seven graduates were awarded Master of Philosophy and Master of Arts degrees in communication, respectively.
Mr Haruna stressed on the government’s dedication to helping research in universities. He emphasise that research played an important role in national development and assured that, the government would provide the necessary and needed resources to support research efforts.
The minister went on urging graduates to apply the knowledge they acquired to drive positive change o enhance development in the country. Prof.Augustine Ocloo, the Deputy Director General of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), remarked that, “in an era where information and communication shape global narratives, your role as graduates of this well trusted institution is very important
He said “the knowledge and skills you have acquired will add up efficiently to national development and the changing of the creative and media landscapes in Ghana and beyond,”
Necessary skills. The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Eric Opoku Mensah, stressed the importance of nurturing graduates with the needed skills to contribute efficiently to national development.
He stated that UniMAC’s aim and goals goes in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically in promoting quality education, industry innovation, gender equality and reducing disproportion.
He also made an undeniable statement about the objectives of UniMAC that, “through research, policy advocacy and academic excellence, we remain dedicated to shaping a future where education serves as a guide and tunnel to prosperity.” He said it with excitement about the fact that UniMAC was training more women in the report that, “out of the total, we are graduating 89 males and 116 females, a testament to empowering more women to speed up action”
