“Eiii! Thunder will strike Trotro Drivers and Mates!” -Angry Trotro Passengers
Passengers will not just get up and say “Thunder will strike Trotro Drivers and Mates” but this have been the case as mates continue to cheat commuters even though the transport fares have been reduced.
Passengers are being cheated in broad daylight by drivers and their mates, and this in making commuters lose their cool.
This cursing of drivers and mates have become rampant in recent times because the two have refused to do what is necessary. They are reluctant to reduce lorry fares and even when you report them to the station master, they rather get the support of the station master instead.
Weeks after the announcement of a 15.3% reduction in lorry fares, many drivers and mates have refused to reduce the lorry fares.
Their argument is that, the cost of spare parts have increased just as the cost of maintenance has gone up.
However, the reasons they are giving for their refusal to comply with the 15.3% reduction are not valid because, fuel prices went up not because of spare parts but because the prices of petroleum products went up.
The drivers and their mates have refused to bring their lorry fares down.
Strangely, the various unions and lorry station did not even print their usual new lorry fares sheets, as they do each time transport fares go up.
By not printing, they continue to cheat passengers. In many instances, they never reduced the lorry fares by 15.3%. Many taxi ranks and their taxi drivers are charging the high fares they were charging before the 15.3% reduction was announced.
During a radio programme on Original FM, 91.9 monitored by Ghana Education News in the morning of 31st December 2022, the hosts of the morning show complained bitterly as some drivers and mates in Teshie, Nungua and its environs continue to charge the old fares and even charge more if you are not aware of the fare.
Commuters from Madina to Dodowa are also suffering the same extortive practices of drivers and mates who have refused to charge the new lorry fare and only reduced it by GHS1.00 while they have refused to reduce the lorry fare for most of the short distance destinations of commuters.

Two days before the new lorry fare increment became effective, drivers and mates on the Madina-Dodowa road charged GHS9.00 per passenger and further charge GHS10.00 per passengers in the evenings.
After the 15.3% reduction the lorry fare which should reduce by GHS1.40 is now GHS8.00. The correct lorry fare should be GHS7.60.
This means each passenger is cheated 40p by these drivers and their mates. This cheating is a widespread practice by drivers and their mates, which must be stopped. Now that there are projections that fuel prices will reduce by 1 January 2023, the government and transport operators must not only announce reduction in lorry fares but must ensure that, the correct lorry fares are printed and pasted in all Trotro just as they do it in a hurry when prices go up.
