The programmes offered and their respective subjects in second-cycle institutions in Ghana continue to undergo changes. The West African Examinations Council has introduced new WAEC SHS/TVET subject combinations for BECE graduates.
These newly introduced programmes and subject combinations offer more opportunities and variations in career options, which should influence the choices made by students. Parents, teachers, schools, and BECE graduates need to understand these various programmes and subject combinations to make informed decisions when selecting schools.
The programmes and their subject combinations now fall under three thematic areas instead of two: Senior High School programmes, Senior High Technical programmes, and STEM School programmes.
What programmes are offered by SHSs and SHTSs in Ghana?
Currently, there are nine programmes under the SHS and SHTS frameworks from which placed students can choose. The programmes are Science, General Arts, Business, Applied Technology, Home Economics, Visual and Performing Arts, Agriculture, Languages, and Global Studies.
What are the STEM Schools programmes?
The Government of Ghana introduced STEM schools with the aim of shifting the country’s education focus from traditional grammar schools towards STEM-focused institutions that provide career options across technology, engineering, and related fields. Currently, STEM schools offer six programmes: Engineering, Biomedical Science, Manufacturing, Information Technology, Computer Science, and Aviation and Aerospace.

Guidance on recommended subject combinations for SHS, SHTS, and STEM schools is essential for both parents and their wards to make informed choices.
This article outlines the minimum and maximum subjects for external WASSCE assessment.
Learners may exit SHS, SHTS, or STEM schools with a minimum of seven and a maximum of nine subjects for external assessment.
Learners may study additional subjects in Year 1 or up to Year 2; however, such subjects are only assessed internally.
The subject selection available at each school depends on the individual school’s capacity and focus areas.
In Ghana, these institutions are classified as either Dedicated STEM Senior High Schools or schools offering STEM (existing schools that have introduced STEM programmes).

Under the General Science programme, there are four subject combinations. The first learning area subjects are Group A (Core), followed by Group B (Learning Area Electives), Group C (Related Electives), and finally, Group D (Other Electives).
