Free SHS Is Not The Reason For The Rise In Indiscipline In SHS – Yaw Osei Adutwum
Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, Minister of Education in an interview on Adom Fm on Tuesday revealed that Free SHS is not the reason for the rise in indiscipline in SHS.
Explaining his reason, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum revealed that caning students usually have no moral effect on the students. He added that pupils usually continue to be stubborn if teachers continue to use cane on them. He believes that using words is the best solution to Indiscipline in schools as compared to caning.
He also revealed that Indiscipline in schools has been in most senior high schools since the inception of formal education in Ghana. According to him, before the introduction of free SHS in Ghana, some students were stubborn. However, the free SHS has only increased the students population. This means if one student used to be stubborn in school, the number will surely increase to two since the students’ population had increased.
“What is the data to show that before the introduction of the free SHS education, students were disciplined. We have all being to secondary school and we know the issues in there. We know it. So before you tell this, you need to give me data. Their numbers have increased so if person used to be indiscipline, then more will join in now. So it is not the question that it is free SHS that has brought indiscipline in SHS.”
” The teachers we loved the most in our schools are not the ones who caned us when we were wrong. It was those who disciplined us with just words. The lashing of students doesn’t have any impact on the students. It’s just how the teacher will use just words to persuade them.”
