Free SHS Is Surest Way Of Adding Value To Our Economy — Akufo-Addo SHS Common Core Programme

Five years into the introduction and implementation of the Free SHS policy by the Akufo Addo-led government, President Akufo-Addo has stated that the implementation of the Free Senior High School (SHS) programme is the surest way of succeeding in adding value to the Ghanaian economy.

The Free SHS policy has seen not less than 400,000 students gaining admission into SHS each year since 2017.

This year, the government brought all public TVET schools under the Free SHS to ensure students who opt for TVET schools also enjoy the Free SHS.

A total of 555,252 students who qualified for SHS/TVET placement are enjoying the Free SHS this year as form 1 students across the country. Out of this 51,267 students have been placed in only TVET schools of which 25,941 had also enrolled according to the education minister.

President Akufo-Addo’s revealed that Free SHS was going to contribute to the Ghanaian economy and be a game-changer. He said this will help to create acceptable, well-paying jobs for the young people of our country.

He made the statement via his tweeter handle.

“The implementation of the Free SHS is the surest way of succeeding in adding value to the Ghanaian economy, thereby helping to create acceptable, well-paying jobs for the young people of our country,” The Presidency quoted Mr Akufo-Addo in a tweet on Monday, April 11.

Minister for Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum says 518,717 students out of the 555,252 who qualified for SHS/TVET placement as of last Friday have successfully been placed into their respective second cycle schools across the country.
