George Weah; first African to win Ballon d’Or

George weah the current president of Liberia is the first black man to win the ultimate Ballon d’Or.

George Weah was born and nurtured in Monrovia the capital city of Liberia on 1st October 1965.

George began his professional football career by playing in many clubs in European countries such as France, England and Italy.  Arsenal Legend Sir Arsene Wenger brought him to Monaco Sporting Club in the year 1998 to play for the French side in the French League1.

In the year 1992,the skilled and talented Weah move to Paris Saint-Germain where he helped the Club to win the league for a quiet period of time since they won it.

They did that in 1994 when George Weah was their top striker.

George Weah went to Italy and signed for AC Milan in the year 1995.

At A.C Milan that is where George Weah breakthrough came, he established himself well and able to win the Serie A on two occasions. From the Serie A, George moved to the English Premier League and signed for Chelsea Football Club on a loan deal and then move to Manchester City.

Again, he returned to France to play for the Olympic club de Marseille in the year 2001. Coming back to the French League 1, he performed massively by scoring goals that help Olympic Marseille to have  stand out in the French  league.

In the year 2003, George Weah ended his football career at Al Jazira FC.

When it comes to international football, George represented  his country Liberia in many competitions with 75 appearances with 18 goals for Liberia at the African Cup of Nations and other tournaments.

George Weah is regarded as the greatest of all time when is come to African football due to his success in winning the Ballon the war in the year 1995 as a player for the AC Milan.

Ballon d’Or is an annual award organise by French magazine with intention of recognising footballers who excel perfectly after the year under review.

It started in the year 1956. It is the most prestigious award in appreciating players who performed massively in both club and National teams.

George Weah became the first African player to be crowned as a Ballon D’or winner in the year 1995.

He also won the African player of the year in 1996 and African player of the century. He also helped the Liberian national team to qualify for AFCON on two occasions,during his prime in football, he was regarded as the best striker in the world football.

After his retirement in 2003, George inters into Politics.

George Weah was a popular figure in Liberia due to his achievement in world football,  in the  year 2004 George Weah became a legislative member in Liberia.

In the year 2018, he contested for presidential election. He won the election on the Run-off stage with 60% of the total votes against his opponent.

He succeeded the first female president in Liberia Ellen Johnson Sirleaf as the president of Liberia.
