GES grants SHS students break for voter registration

The Ghana Education Service aka GES has granted senior high School (SHS) students who are of age, 18 and above, to go on a break for registration of their voter ID.
This is a temporary move, which begins on May 7 to May 10 2024, was made to allow students participate in the voter registration process, a significant part of the Civic rights in Ghana’s democracy.
This decision by GES was formally publicized in a statement released by the GES on 6th May 2024, just a day before the break.
Recognizing the benefits of fostering civic duties among the students, the Ghana Education Service sees this move as an opportunity for students to engage directly in the democratic process, thereby enhancing their understanding and appreciation of their roles as citizens.
Furthermore, the Ghana Education Service has communicated detailed instructions to all Regional Directors of Education, mandating them to ensure full compliance with this directive.
These directors are responsible for relaying the information to all Heads of Second Cycle Institutions within their jurisdictions, who are then tasked with facilitating the orderly departure and return of students.

This organizational effort underscores the importance placed on minimizing disruption to educational schedules while accommodating the electoral participation mandate.
This directive not only facilitates logistical access to voter registration centers but also implicitly encourages young citizens to take an active interest in the governance of their country.
By integrating civic duty into the educational experience of students, the GES aims to cultivate a generation that is both knowledgeable and enthusiastic about their rights and responsibilities as voters.
As these students out of their schools to engage in this civic right, the broader message from GES is clear: participation in national processes is not just a right but a duty that each citizen must cherish and perform with diligence.
The expectation is that such initiatives will help to strengthen the democratic fabric of the nation and inspire more young people to participate actively in shaping the future of their country.
