GES, President Mahama & Education Minister Roll Out STEM Box Initiative to Revolutionize Basic Schools
- President Mahama Rolls Out Roll STEM Box Initiative to Revolutionize Basic Schools in Ghana.
In a move that education experts are calling a game changer, the Ghana Education Service (GES) joined President John Dramani Mahama and the Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu, to officially launch a bold new science education initiative aimed at basic schools across the country.
The STEM Box initiative, unveiled on December 4, 2025, marks a major shift in how science, technology, engineering, and mathematics are taught at the foundational level. The rollout — attended by top government officials and key education stakeholders — signals a renewed national focus on practical learning that moves beyond textbooks into real‐world application.
President Mahama, speaking at the launch in Accra, highlighted that the tools inside the STEM Boxes were “made by Ghanaians for Ghanaian students,” stressing the importance of nurturing curiosity in young learners from their very first years in school. He underscored that early exposure to hands‐on science activities could lay the groundwork for Ghana’s future innovators, scientists, and tech leaders.
Prof. Ernest Kofi Davis, Director-General of GES, described the STEM Box as a “game-changing toolkit” designed to cultivate creativity, problem-solving skills and scientific thinking in classrooms that traditionally lacked laboratory resources. He said the initiative represents a critical step in preparing pupils to thrive in a world increasingly shaped by robotics, artificial intelligence and innovation.
Alongside government leadership, strategic support has come from the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund), which has played a pivotal role in financing the nationwide rollout of the STEM Boxes to selected basic schools. GETFund officials say the investment is part of a long-term plan to expand access to modern, practical STEM education throughout Ghana, especially in underserved communities.
GES also stressed that teachers would be given structured training on how to integrate the STEM Boxes into weekly instruction, ensuring that pupils not only receive the tools but are guided on how to use them effectively. Stakeholders at the launch called on parents, school leaders, and local communities to actively support the initiative, framing it as a shared national responsibility.

Education analysts say the STEM Box rollout could be one of the defining education reforms of 2025, with potential long-lasting impact on Ghana’s future workforce and competitiveness in science and technology sectors. As the programme begins to reach classrooms around the country, many educators and parents are watching closely to see how it transforms day-to-day teaching and learning for young learners.
