GES Releases Term 2 Academic Calendar For Basic Schools – See The New Changes
The Ghana Education Services (GES) has released its academic table indicating specific re-opening dates for basic schools in second semester.
As you already know, Basic Schools in Ghana are currently on vacation. Schools went on vacation Friday, 22nd December, 2023.
Let’s take a look at the second term academic calendar for basic schools according to the Ghana Education Service.
Basic schools will spend a total of 14 weeks in the second term of the 2023/2024 academic year. Basic Schools will resume for the second term on January 9, 2024. They will then be in school till April 11, 2024.
They will go on vacation from April 12 to 29, 2024.

The students will return to school on April 30 for the third term which will last for 13 weeks, during which period Form Three students will write the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in July 2024.
However, Form One and Form Two students will be in school from April 30 to July 25, 2024. In all, the students are to have a total of 39 weeks of contact.
When asked about the feasibility of the proposed calendar, Dr. Eric Nkansah, Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), assured that the plans were well in place for a smooth execution.
In contrast, Kofi Asare, Executive Director of Africa Education Watch, expressed reservations. He highlighted the need for thorough explanations to help parents comprehend the intricacies of the calendar. As an example, he pointed out the discrepancy in start dates between Form Two students under the transitional calendar (March 8, 2024) and Form One students following the single-track calendar (November 1, 2023).
Asare questioned the rationale behind such variations in academic timelines for Form Three students under both calendars. He also pondered the disparity in the duration of the academic year, emphasizing the extended time Form One students would spend in school compared to their time at home, which he viewed positively.
